Snowfall moves in after Epiphany weekend

Finland's Epiphany holiday started off in relatively dry conditions, but that was forecast to change as the holiday draws to a close.

Epiphany is a cold but dry day for most of Finland, according to Yle meteorologist Aleksi Lohtander.

"Monday's temperatures are below freezing nationwide," said Lohtander. "In Lapland it will be -10 to -25 degrees Celsius, in southern Finland around -5."

On Monday night that will change, as a band of precipitation that has wrought havoc in the UK hits Finland.

In the south and west of Finland the weather front is expected to bring between five and ten centimetres of snow, with slightly less in the centre of the country.

The snowfall will mean poor driving conditions in southern and central Finland on Tuesday.

"It will fall as freezing rain at times, especially around the edges of the weather front, which could affect driving conditions as well," warned Lohtander.

Southern warming

The weather will also get milder on Tuesday, with southern Finland set for temperatures several degrees above freezing.

In central parts of the country the temperature was forecast to be between -5 and -10 degrees, with the wind chill factor making it feel colder.

On Wednesday a new band of precipitation is expected to bring 5-10 centimetres of new snow to eastern Finland.

The rest of the country is expected to be mostly dry.
