Private contractors are responsible for maintaining provincial highways year-round 28 different contract service areas throughout the province. Each contractor repairs and maintains the driving surface, completes all roadside upkeep and handles bridge and winter maintenance.

Some examples of the contractor’s duties include:

  • Pothole patching
  • Maintenance of gravel roads
  • Signage maintenance
  • Bridge repair
  • Crack sealing
  • Snow and ice control
  • Drainage management
  • Traffic management

Agreement & Specifications

There are 28 highway maintenance service areas across the province. Each service area follows the same template for its form of highway maintenance agreement, depending on when each contract began.

Quality & Safety

Contractors must meet obligations outlined in the highway maintenance service agreements to protect public safety, the environment, the infrastructure, and public funds.

Contractors undergo local, regional and stakeholder assessments to ensure compliance with the maintenance specifications and contract requirements.

Report a problem such as pot holes, highway or bridge damage, sign damage, pavement marking, drainage problems, road debris or an animal carcass.

You can also report electrical problems like overhead signs, street lights, pedestrian lighting, and signals that are out or damaged.

The avalanche safety plan provides an established set of practices related to working in highway operations and maintenance in avalanche terrain.
