Tajikistan is a landlocked country with a population of 10.2 million people, where 93 percent of the territory is covered by mountains.
Malnutrition continues to be widespread, as are micronutrient deficiencies in vitamin A and iron. Anaemia affects 35.2 percent of women and girls of reproductive age.
Tajikistan's prudent monetary policy and appreciation of the exchange rate have enabled the country to attain the lowest inflation rate in the region.
WFP provides access to nutritional support and healthcare, promotes school meals, builds resilience to the effects of climate change, and ensures preparedness for recurring disasters.
What the World Food Programme is doing in Tajikistan
-
Resilience building
-
Communities receive cash transfers for working on community assets such as irrigation systems, soil conservation and regeneration, drinking-water supplies, and the construction of bridges, roads and other critical infrastructure. These assets reduce the risk of disaster, build climate resilience and strengthen livelihoods.
-
School meals
-
WFP has partnered with the Government of Tajikistan to deliver school meals since 1999 – our largest operation in the country. Daily meals are supplied to more than 500,000 schoolchildren across 2,000 schools in 53 districts and towns. Providing food to children at school every day can mean not only better nutrition and health, but also increased educational achievement.
-
Nutrition
-
Working with the Government, UNICEF and WHO, WFP supports parents and health centres responding to moderate acute malnutrition. In 2023, the programme reached more than 5,000 children aged 6–59 months, mainly offering fortified cereals, in more than 200 primary healthcare centres in Khatlon and Sughd regions. Furthermore, WFP uses national media outlets to encourage healthy food consumption, diet diversity and hygiene.
-
Capacity strengthening
-
WFP provides policy advice, technical assistance, and capacity and systems strengthening to government ministries, public institutions and private sector organizations, in support of efforts to eradicate hunger.
