In 2024, Waseda University’s Research Institute of Business Administration (RIBA) is celebrating its 50th anniversary since its founding. Despite undergoing reorganization over the years, it has consistently pursued the mission declared at its founding: “Contributing to the real world through the academic results of our research activities.”

The Institute mainly comprises full-time faculty members from Waseda University’s School of Commerce and Graduate School of Accountancy, along with adjunct researchers from outside the university. These researchers participate in the Institute’s subcommittees, contributing from a variety of specialization backgrounds that extend beyond individual specialties. Consequently, they are actively conducting academic research on a wide range of topics. RIBA shared its research outcomes through the peer-reviewed academic journal “Waseda Business Review (Sangyo Keiei)”, as well as other publications and media. Furthermore, the Institute engages in joint and consigned research with organizations outside of Waseda University, sharing the fruits of its research with society at large. RIBA also contributes to educational activities by accepting training programs from foreign universities, private companies, and special organizations, among others. Moreover, RIBA hosts the well-regarded Waseda University Business Plan Contest annually to support students in new business start-ups.

Recent years have seen a greater emphasis on “convergence knowledge.” In response to societal changes, such as the rise of AI, intellectual and scholarly activities are being driven by new proposals that surpass existing academic categories and specialties. The field of commerce, focusing on business, encompasses the humanities and social sciences, making it a vital seedbed for convergence knowledge. RIBA will continue to promote and enhance its academic excellence and results to maintain its role as a valuable source of convergence knowledge shared with the society at large.
