Museum property collections come in many forms, all with characteristics that make them worthy of long-term preservation and management. Museum property collections held by Reclamation consist primarily of archaeological objects and their associated records, but also include archives, art, geology, history, and paleontology. Reclamation has an estimated 9 million museum property items.

The Museum Property Program is part of Reclamation's Cultural Resources Management Program. The goals of the Museum Property Program are to be:

•accountable in identifying and documenting collections, as well as implementing required Departmental core plans;

•sustainable to ensure adherence to policies and directives, fund staff and program needs, consolidate collections to minimize the number of repositories utilized, and manage storage conditions appropriately; and

•responsible to implement curation and financial agreements with non-Bureau repositories, adhere to Departmental requirements, and facilitate access for education, exhibition, scientific research, Tribal needs, and related purposes.
