Created in 2011 by UNESCO, at the initiative of renowned jazz legend Herbie Hancock, the International Jazz Day aims to highlight the contribution of jazz in promoting peace, uniting people and fostering cooperation around the world.
Following the success of the Biennale of Luanda Jazz Day in 2021, this year’s edition will have two main dimensions: a regional one with the involvement of Central African countries and a national one, taking place in Angola.

The “Voices of the Biennale of Luanda” is a bi-monthly newsletter, published in English, French and Portuguese, which aims to give all stakeholders involved in the Biennale the opportunity to engage, share stories, projects and initiatives that show how peace and security are essential for sustainable development.

Organized in partnership between UNESCO, the Government of Angola and the African Union, the Biennale of Luanda - “Pan-African Forum for the Culture of Peace” aims to promote the prevention of violence and the resolution of conflicts, by encouraging cultural exchanges in Africa, dialogue between generations and the promotion of gender equality. As a space for reflection and dissemination of artistic works, ideas and best practices related to the culture of peace, it brings together representatives of governments, civil society, the artistic and scientific community, and international organizations
While opportunities for sustainable development in Africa are growing, the continent still faces many challenges including the risk of major instability and conflict. UNESCO advocates for the promotion of a culture of peace and non-violence in Africa based on shared African values.

A Celebration of the African Union's 2021 Theme!
The Biennale was also a major opportunity to celebrate the African Union's 2021 theme, "Arts, Culture and Heritage: Levers for Building the Africa We Want" and to extend the 2020 theme, "Silencing the Guns in Africa".
The African continent is known for its cultural and natural diversity and profuseness. Expressed through its arts, crafts, clothing, cuisine, music and languages, the richness of African culture serves as a catalyst for the socio-economic development of the continent. The Biennale of Luanda offers a privileged space of exchange where to highlight the richness of this African tangible and intangible heritage and to explore the innovative and inclusive solutions that arise from it for Africa to prosper.
