Organization of work and establishment of working groups

The Chair made a statement.

The Chair drew the attention of the Committee to the note by the Secretariat on the allocation of items to the Sixth Committee (A/C.6/79/1) and the organization of work (A/C.6/79/L.1).

The Committee adopted its programme of work on the basis of document A/C.6/79/L.1.

Pursuant to General Assembly resolution 78/102 of 7 December 2023, the General Assembly reiterated its decision that the consideration of the report of the Group of Legal Experts, in particular its legal aspects, should be continued during its seventy-ninth session in the framework of a working group of the Sixth Committee on criminal accountability of United Nations officials and experts on mission. The Working Group shall be open to all States Members of the United Nations or members of specialized agencies or of the International Atomic Energy Agency will be invited to participate. The Committee elected Mr. Marvin Ikondere (Uganda) as the Chair of the Working Group.

Pursuant to General Assembly resolution 78/113 of 7 December 2023, the Committee established a Working Group on the scope and application of the principle of universal jurisdiction to continue to undertake a thorough discussion of the scope and application of universal jurisdiction. The Working Group shall be open to all Member States and relevant observers to the General Assembly will be invited to participate in the work of the Working Group. The Committee elected Mr. Gustavo Ramírez Baca (Costa Rica) as the Chair of the Working Group.

Pursuant to General Assembly resolution 76/119 of 9 December 2021, the Committee decided to establish a Working Group to examine the draft articles on protection of persons in the event of disasters and to consider further the recommendation of the International Law Commission for the elaboration of a convention by the Assembly or by an international conference of plenipotentiaries on the basis of the draft articles, or any other potential course of action with respect to the draft articles, also in the light of the views and comments expressed in the debates of the Sixth Committee, as well as the comments and observations received from Governments. The Working Group shall be open to all States Members of the United Nations and the relevant observers to the General Assembly. The Committee elected Amb. Antonio Lagdameo (Philippines) as the Chair of the Working Group.

Pursuant to General Assembly resolution 78/115 of 9 December 2023, the Committee established a Working Group on measures to eliminate international terrorism with a view to finalizing the process on the draft comprehensive convention on international terrorism as well as discussions on the item included in its agenda by Assembly resolution 54/110 concerning the question of convening a high-level conference under the auspices of the United Nations. The Working Group shall be open to all States Members of the United Nations or members of specialized agencies or of the International Atomic Energy Agency. The Committee elected Amb. Peter Mohan Maithri Pieris (Sri Lanka) as the Chair of the Working Group.
