Shizuoka Campus International students enrolled in a Japanese language course in Japan performed a Japanese play at The University Festival

Shizuoka Campus International students enrolled in the “Shimizu Jirocho” Japanese language drama program at the 3rd Shizuoka Campus The University Festival held on November 2nd and 3rd, 2024. Six international students participated in the performance, which was held in the gymnasium on November 2nd and in Room 3310 on November 3rd.

The Japanese-language play was written and directed by Ms. Saiki, the faculty member in charge of the play, and the characters, posters, props, and sound effects were created by the international students. The props used in the play, such as the Sandogasa hats, striped wings, and swords, were provided by the Shimizu Port Boat Inn Memorial Hall, and costumes by the Hadano citizens’ theater company, Okarazuka Revue. The International Fair also held in Room 3310 on the 3rd. International students (from China, Taiwan, Korea, Malaysia, and Gabon) gave presentations about their hometowns and heroes for international students. In addition, international students from Gabon performed African dance and danced with the visitors.

Through this project work, Ms. Saiki said, “It was impressive that the international students became bolder in their acting and louder in their voices as they practiced their plays and presentations, and that their speech became more active in class afterwards. I hope that international students will continue to actively participate in university events in the future.” The participating international students shared their impressions, saying, “I used to think that The University Festival was for Japanese students and had nothing to do with us, but I now realize that it is many times more fun to participate than to watch”.
