It is said that the name “Yunokawa” comes from a combination of the word “Yu” (meaning hot water) and the word “Betsu” (meaning river) in the language of Hokkaido’s original inhabitants, the Ainu.
This location became more frequented during the Meiji Era as its waters gradually increased in mass and temperature to exceed 100ºC.
Due its burgeoning popularity, the area has developed with restaurants, inns and other shops to serve its patronage.
Now 4.5 million people visit Hakodate every year and about 1.3 million people stay in Yunokawa Onsen out of 2.7 million people who use overnight lodging.
Plenty of popular sightseeing spots frequented by visitors include: The National Cultural property garden “Kosetsuen (Miharashi Koen)”, Trappistine Convent, Nesaki Beach, the Tropical Botanical Garden famous for its Japanese monkeys who love dipping in the hot spring.
