Taiho Pharmaceutical Adds New Measures to Reduce Smoking Among Employees to Zero by 2023

Percentage of employees smoking down to 5.6% in 2022,from 15% in 2020

Taiho Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. has been taking various measures since 2020*1 to encourage employees to quit smoking and to reduce the percentage of employees who smoke to zero by 2023. As a result of these measures, percentage of employees who smoke decreased to 5.6% as of May 2022, from 15% in June 2020. The company has added even more measures since July 2022 and is continuing its efforts to achieve the goal by 2023.

In February 2017, Taiho Pharmaceutical announced its Health Pledge*2 to protect the health of all employees, their families, and the people around them. This pledge is aligned with the company’s awareness of, responsibility for, and close involvement with human life, as a company whose main business area is the field of oncology.

The main measures being implemented to reduce smoking are as given below. (Those marked with an asterisk [*] are additional measures added in 2022.)

Smoking cessation support

  • Subsidy for smoking cessation outpatient expenses (including online sessions)
  • Disseminating information on the harms of smoking to all employees
  • Sharing of smoking cessation experiences through in-house seminars, etc.
  • Conducting interviews with smokers*

Strengthening and thoroughly implementing internal rules

  • Prohibited smoking in all laboratory and factory areas
  • No smoking at all during working hours (including breaks*)

Requirements for hiring and promotion to managerial positions

  • Being a non-smoker to be a condition for new or mid-career hires
  • Smoking as one of the factors considered for promotion to department manager
  • Smoking as one of the factors considered for promotion to management and administrative positions*
  • Smoking as one of the factors considered for continued post-retirement employment classification*
