U.S. veterans routinely face challenges as they transition from military service to another career, whether in the public or private sector. Military skills and technical experiences don’t neatly translate to civilian terms, and the structure of corporate America doesn’t always reflect the hierarchical armed forces.
This Veterans Day, Synack is proud to join Microsoft to host a special in-person event aimed at helping veterans make a successful transition into the cybersecurity industry. It’s just one way Synack – a four-time recipient of the HIRE Vets Medallion Award at the Gold level – is supporting the veteran community.

Synack and Microsoft’s event Monday, The Critical Missions in Cyber, will provide veterans with resources, networking opportunities and insights into the cybersecurity industry.
Despite the well-documented gap in the cybersecurity workforce needed to address critical national security challenges, entry-level cyber jobs can be hard to land, particularly for applicants lacking certifications or connections. The barriers to entry can be higher for vets who may even face discrimination from employers unfamiliar with military experience.
Synack recognizes the unique and selfless contributions of U.S. veterans from all backgrounds and is committed to fostering an inclusive workforce. This extends to the Synack Red Team of diverse cybersecurity researchers, where many current and former members of the military have found a new and exciting mission tackling some of the most dynamic challenges in cybersecurity today.
Two veteran members of the Synack Red Team – John Petteway and Johnny Villarreal – will share their experiences transitioning out of the military and offer unique cybersecurity insights in a panel discussion that also features DOD cyber leaders Melissa Vice and Nicole Thompson. Marine Corps Major Gen. (Ret.) Gregg Sturdevant, Army Lieutenant Colonel Adam Rosenbaum, Marine Corps Sergeant (Ret.) Nelson Martinez and several other veterans are also slated to speak at the event.
