The name Synack comes from a cornerstone of cybersecurity. The “three-way handshake” used to establish trusted network connections has synchronize and acknowledge steps for transferring information between sender and receiver. In that constant flow of data, we saw the potential to unite technology and human intelligence in a different kind of handshake that would revolutionize the cybersecurity world: Synack.

Our story

Synack co-founders Jay Kaplan and Mark Kuhr launched their careers with the NSA and U.S. Department of Defense as technical security experts protecting the country from both kinetic and cyber attacks. They shared a vision to revolutionize cybersecurity by combining human intelligence with a fast, efficient and scalable platform to transform the experience of security testing for all customers. Synack was born.

Our Journey

2013

Jay Kaplan and Dr. Mark Kuhr leave the NSA to launch Synack, with a vision to transform security testing.

2014

Secures $7.5M in Series A funding round from Kleiner Perkins and closes $25M in Series B funds by GGV Capital and Icon Ventures.

2015

Earns first patent: Utilizing a crowdsourced network to find vulnerabilities in applications.

2016

Closes first European deal and first $2M federal deal in the U.S.

2017

Secures $26 million in Series C funding led by M12.

2018

Releases “Attacker Resistance Score,” offering customers a way to effectively track security progress over time, and surpasses 1000 active Synack Red Team members.

2019

Launches SmartScan® product for intelligent vulnerability assessments.

2020

Raises $52 million in a Series D funding round co-led by B Capital Group and C5 Capital.

2021

Launches the README news publication and WE’RE IN! cybersecurity podcast series to enrich the infosec media landscape.

2022

Synack launches adversarial API pentesting capability, expanding testing across more critical endpoints.

2023

Synack leads first pentesting missions on AI/LLM applications through its PTaaS platform, leveraging Synack Red Team members’ AI expertise.

2023

Synack achieves FedRAMP Moderate Authorized designation for security testing, confirming our commitment to public sector.

2024
