Hope Springs 英会話スクール

居心地の良い雰囲気の中で学ぶことができる英会話スクールを経営しています。ここへ来てくれる生徒さんが何を求め、どのような学びを必要としているかを真摯に考えながら、英語を教えています。子ども用と大人用の2つのクラスルームがあり、それぞれのご希望に合わせて一人ひとりレッスンの内容をカスタマイズしています。

Hope Springsには、多くの子どもたちが英語を学ぶためにやってきます。英語が好きで意欲的な子どもたちに教えるのは本当に楽しいです。小さなお子さんと、歌ったりダンスをしたりゲームをするのも面白いですよ。

大人に教えるのも非常にやりがいがあります。基礎的なスキルを身につけたいビギナーの方から、幅広いトピックスを扱うディスカッションを通して語彙力を高めたい方まで、様々な職業・年代の方が来てくれています。毎年大学病院で、何名か他のスクールの講師と一緒に医療英語を医学部の3年生に教える授業も担当しており、とても良い経験となっています。また、長年お付き合いのあるドクターから学術論文の校正を依頼されることもあります。

Hope Springsは自宅から近い場所につくりました。自分自身や家族のためにもう少し自由な時間をつくったり、自分のすべきことを管理したいと思ったからです。英語を教えることに対しての基本的な考え方やスタイルは変わっていませんが、一つひとつのレッスン準備にかける時間を、今はじっくりとることができています。

－ Could you tell us about your current business?
At Hope Springs, we create a good atmosphere for learning, and we teach English by thinking about what each individual wants and needs. We have two classrooms, one for children and one for adults. We customize our style and lessons to our students.

The kids who come to our school are here to learn English. I really enjoy teaching people who want to learn. And it’s fun to sing, dance and play games with young kids

I also really like teaching adults – from beginners, building basic skills, to advanced students, discussing a wide range of topics and building vocabulary. Every year, I teach "Medical English" to third-year medical students at a university hospital with several other teachers. That’s also very good. Sometimes, people whom I've known before come to ask me to proofread their academic papers.

I opened Hope Springs in a new location closer to home to have a little more free time and have more control over what I do. My fundamental approach to teaching has not changed, but I now have more freedom to focus on the needs of the individual.

Hope Springsの近くには大手英会話教室がいくつかありますが、レベルによってグループ分けされた多くの人たちが、一つの部屋でレッスンを行うスクールもあると聞きました。
昔私が勤めていた英会話教室でも、間仕切りで仕切られただけの大きな教室に大勢の人がいました。隣のグループの声が聞こえてくるため、講師も生徒さんも声を張り上げて話さなければならず、落ち着いて学べる環境ではありませんでした。また、60歳の女性と小学生の男の子が一緒のグループになり、会話が続かなかったのを覚えています。共通点が全く無いグループでのレッスンは、あまり楽しめないと思うんです。大きなスクールは生徒数も多いので、それぞれにピッタリ合ったグループづくりは難しいのかもしれませんが、Hope Springsでは、英語力のレベルが近く、かつ相性が良いと思われる人同士でなるべくグループをつくるようにしています。

また、カリキュラムやテキストが決まっている英会話教室も多いと思いますが、Hope Springsはもっと柔軟です。私がこれまで身につけてきた知識や経験をもとに、生徒さんたちの興味に合わせたレッスンを行うことが可能です。時には、生徒さんが持参した一冊の本を何週間もかけて一緒に読み込んでいくこともありますし、1回完結型で面白いストーリーを扱うこともあります。

それから、多くの英会話教室は照明が蛍光灯でオフィスの会議室のようですが、Hope Springsは違います。照明の明かりは柔らかく、コーヒーの良い香りがして、洋楽が流れていて……とにかく良い雰囲気なんです（笑）。

－ What makes your school different from all the English schools out there?
Close to Hope Springs, there are some large English schools. I heard that people of varying English levels there are grouped into large classes. At a school where I used to work long ago, there were a lot of people in little cubicles. The teachers were shouting, the students were shouting, and it was kind of chaotic. I also remember a 60-year-old woman being in a class with a boy from elementary school. They had nothing to talk about with each other. If there is no connection between the students, it often isn’t fun. In big schools, it is difficult to give individualized lessons. At Hope Springs, we create classes of students with similar English abilities, personalities, and chemistry.

Usually, English schools have fixed curriculums and textbooks, but we are more flexible. For students, I can use my knowledge and experience to provide individualized lessons in an interesting way. Sometimes, we spend weeks going over every chapter in a book, which gives a sense of continuation; other times, we look at one interesting story for one lesson.

In addition, while most English schools have fluorescent lighting, like that of office conference rooms, Hope Springs has a much nicer atmosphere. The lighting is soft, there’s the nice smell of coffee, and good music. It's......well....just nice (laughs).

とにかく良いレッスン、良い教育を提供したいです。そして、生徒さんたちやスタッフ、皆を幸せにしたいと思っています。そのためにも講師があと一人か二人必要なのですが、これがなかなか難しいんです。コロナ禍の影響で日本に来る外国人より出て行く外国人の方が多くなっていて、優秀な講師が非常に少ないのです。講師は必要ですが、クラスルームは2つしかないですし、どんどんスクールを大きくしていこうとは今は思っていません。世界を征服するつもりはないですから（笑）。

－ What are your future business plans?
With regards to the school, we just want to provide good classes and good education, and make everyone – our students and staff – happy. In order to do that, we need one or two more teachers, but this is very difficult. Due to COVID–19, fewer people are coming to Japan and more are leaving, so the population of good teachers is very small. Although we need teachers, we only have two classrooms, so we’re not going to expand a lot. I'm not looking to conquer the world (laughs).
