Scholarships Available Exclusively for GIGA Program International Students

The Keio University Faculty of Policy Management, and Faculty of Environment and Information Studies offer some scholarships for exceptional students accepted through the Winter AO 2024 screening [Admissions for the GIGA Program]. Applicants may apply for these scholarships the same time they apply for the GIGA Program. Applications for these scholarships will not be accepted after entrance into Keio University.
Applicants may apply for all of these scholarships, but only one scholarship will be awarded if selected to be a recipient.

Eligibility Requirements

The following eligibility requirements apply to all of the scholarships. To be considered for these scholarships, you must:

  • be accepted through the Winter AO 2024 screening [Admissions for the GIGA Program] to enter the Faculty of Policy Management, or the Faculty of Environment and Information Studies, and enroll in September 2025 (applicants who wish to enroll in April are NOT eligible)
  • be an incoming first-year student
  • be a foreign national

Persons who hold any of the following Japanese residency statuses are NOT eligible to apply: Permanent Resident, Special Permanent Resident, Spouse or Child of Japanese National, Spouse or Child of Permanent Resident, or Long-Term Resident.

Application Procedures

You may apply through the Online Application System. Application for the scholarships above can ONLY be made at the time of application for the GIGA Program.

Notification of Award

Your results will be sent to your registered email address within one week of the announcement of your screening results.

Scholarships Available after entering Keio University

In addition, Keio University, various organizations and foundations, including government and private entities, also offer financial aid to international students studying in Japan.

Scholarships Provided by the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO)

Honors Scholarships for Privately Financed International Students

The amount awarded: JPY 48,000 per month
Duration: 1 year (students may apply every year)

Scholarships Provided by Keio University

Keio University Scholarship for Undergraduate Students (in the second year or above)

The amount awarded: JPY 250,000 or JPY 500,000 per year to exceptional students (paid in a lump sum)
Duration: one year (students may apply every year)

Keio University Degree Completion Scholarship

The amount awarded: within the limits of the relevant year's academic fee (average JPY 300,000) (paid in a lump sum)
Duration: 1 year

Yamaoka Kenichi Memorial Scholarship for 1st year undergraduate students

The amount awarded: JPY 900,000 for one year (paid in a lump sum)
Duration: 1 year

Yamaoka Kenichi Memorial Scholarship (for students in the second year or above)

The amount awarded: JPY 500,000 for one year (paid in a lump sum)
Duration: 1 year

Goldman Sachs Scholars Fund

The amount awarded: JPY 500,000 for one year (paid in lump sum)
Duration: 1 year

Scholarships Provided by Private Foundations and Local Governments

There are around 100 scholarships provided by private foundations and local governments available to international students who are or will be studying in Japan, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Some of them are open to all students, whereas others are targeted specifically at students who are from certain countries and regions or studying particular fields.
Amount awarded: JPY 10,000 - JPY 180,000 monthly
