Measurement method
The concentrations of VOCs in ambient air are continuously measured with Proton Transfer Reaction - Mass Spectrometer (PTR-MS). PTR is one of ion-molecule reactions that transfer proton (H+) to VOCs, utilizing the differences in proton affinity between proton and VOCs. Hence, non-methane hydrocarbons except low-molecule alkanes, and oxygenated-VOCs including alcohols, aldehydes, and ketones can be detected selectively. Nitric Oxide, Nitrogen Dioxide, Nitrogen Oxides, Reactive Nitrogen Compounds are measured by a chemiluminescence method, combined with a pholytic and heated molybdenum converters.
Calculation method
The instrument was calibrated with zero-air and gas standards at the NIES laboratory and also the field site. Also, humidity dependence of the detection sensitivity is characterized in a laboratory experiments and corrected for the ambient data.
