About NICT Asia Center

Outside view of NICT Asia Center

NICT Asia Center is the overseas dispatch office of NICT in Southeast Asia. The center promotes collaborative activities in ICT R&D field with Southeast Asian countries along the NICT’s international harmonization policy. The center carries out the following major activities.
-Operates stronghold basis research projects in Southeast Asia where local advantages on research work can be applied.
-Conducts collaborative research project on a fresh and timely subject with organization concerned.
-Organizes seminars and workshops regarding recent high technologies.
-Assists effective apply of advanced research facilities such as high speed internet network.
-Promotes bridging assistance in applying research resources and products of NICT for ICT research needs in Southeast Asia countries.
Accordingly, ARC strives to deepen collaboration with ICT research organizations in the region, and contributes countries growth by leading advanced ICT R&D.

Principal duties

-General coordination, communication and support for the collaborative ICT R&D activities between Asian countries and Japan.
-Information exchange, consultation and advice on pioneering of new research projects with NICT and other related institution in the field of ICT R&D and relevant field.
-Assistance of exchange researchers, acceptance of training personnel -Public relations, news gathering and distribution.

  • ICT Virtual Organization of ASEAN Institutes and NICT[PDF 3.51MB]
    Based on the research collaboration that NICT has cultivated with Southeast Asia, it is a virtual research collaboration organization established in February 2015 in collaboration with 25 research institutions and universities in the ASEAN region. In order to promote ICT R & D in the region and develop research results across multiple countries, we hold an IVO forum every year to share ideas to solve common social issues in the region, and to make joint proposals after proposals and reviews. It is being carried out.
    A private company can be a member of the organization or a project member (there is no financial support for the private company). We also welcome project funding or joint project promotion.

  • Chulalongkorn University and NICT Photonics joint research and collaboration lab[PDF 1.73MB]
    There is a Photonic collaborative research lab at Chulalongkorn University in Thailand, where various research equipment is installed to promote collaborative research on optical communication in Southeast Asia. It is also introduced at the National Science Technology Fair in Thailand. This research facility is partly a facility of Chulalongkorn University, but we will consider joint use depending on the purpose.
  • SEALION activities in Southeast Asia and space weather initiatives at KMITL, Thailand[PDF 341KB]
    We have established an ionospheric observation network in Southeast Asia mainly for the purpose of investigating the generation mechanism of plasma bubbles, which is the most important irregular structure of the ionosphere. By collecting such data, we will be able to link it to space weather forecast activities. It is also introduced at National Science Technology Fair in Thailand.
  • Himawari Real-time Web Development in Southeast Asian Countries[PDF 1.71MB]
    In order to promote the use of the data of Himawari, which is a Japanese meteorological satellite, we are releasing it to Southeast Asian countries. With mirror sites already set up in Thailand, Philippines and Taiwan, anyone can view weather information such as cloud conditions in real time from their smartphones day or night. It is also introduced at National Science Technology Fair in Thailand. We can also provide raw data for academic purposes.
  • UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in Lake Chini, Malaysia Water quality monitoring[PDF 1.18MB]
    Lake Chini in eastern Malaysia is considered a UNESCO biosphere reserve, but water quality management is an issue, and real-time measurement is a technical issue because it is a jungle area. Therefore, we are working to build a system that uses LoRa / Wi-SUN technology and can continue power saving and autonomous operation as a private network. This project is a project derived from the ASEAN IVO project, and NICT Asia Center is an expected project to participate in Lake Chini activities.
  • Field trial of distance learning for rural areas in Cambodia[PDF 1.19MB]
    The National Institute of Posts, Telecoms & ICT (NIPTICT) in Cambodia and NICT tried to improve the educational environment as one of the solutions to the digital divide of people in the rural area. The NerveNet technology developed and researched by NICT is called SchoolNet at the core, and it has been experimentally introduced to 12 elementary, middle and high schools. As a result, we were able to transfer skills to NIPTICT to promote in Cambodia. We hope that the founders and various NGOs will support this activity in the future.

Event or Topic in 2021

  • National Science Technology Fair
    NICT Asia Center participated in NSTF2021 with Chula. NSTF was organized by the Ministry of HigherEducation, Science, Research and Innovation, and was held at IMPACT. H.E. General Prayut Chan-o-cha also appeared at the our booth, Assoc. Prof. Duang-rudee Worasucheep and Mr. Nishino(Director of NICT Asia Center) introduced the situation of the joint research. In addition, Dr. Budsara Boriboon also participated and explained joint research with NICT to some interviwers.

  • ASEAN-U.S. Science Prize for Women 2020 National Finalist
    On May 4,2020, Wida Susanty Haji Suhaili of Networked ASEAN Peat Swamp Forest Communities of IVO project was selected as the title.
  • Site visit to Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai landslide monitoring areas in Thailand[PDF 532KB]
    NICT is a project member of "Establishment of a Landslide Monitoring and Prediction System", one of the projects joint research project of e-ASIA Joint research program "e-ASIA JRP" supported by JST. From February 8 to 11, we joined titled site visit and survey with project members.
  • Radar opening ceremony in Chumphon, Thailand[PDF 493KB]
    On January 17,2020, NICT's Space Environment Laboratory completed installation of VHF radar in Chumphon City, Thailand, in collaboration with King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, Kingdom of Thailand. As a result, the opening ceremony was held.
  • National Science Technology Fair 2020 of Thailand
    NICT participates in the National Science Technology Fair of Thailand every year.
    In 2020, it will be held at the Impact Convention Center in Nonthaburi in November (details unknown for COVID-19).
  • CU-NICT Workshop on Photonic Network Research 2020
    A workshop on network fields will be held at the Chulalongkorn University (CU) in Thailand in 2020.

It is easy to configure a disaster-resistant mesh network. It is possible to configure the nodes of network is to install only the software on your hardware Raspberry Pi with setting up a VPN on the Internet, it is a technology that can contribute to the digital divide such as smart villages.

NICT has developed the HpVT protocol for high-speed image transfer, which is also used for the transfer of Himawari image data from meteorological satellites. Utilizing HpVT, we have established a Visual IoT system that performs edge computing for image processing of camera images and collects data in a server.

NICT Asia Center has developed a general-purpose sensor node hardware for the IoT, which is aware of Edge Computing using RasPi and its charge controller, with NECTEC(National Electronics and Computer Technology Center), a research institute in Thailand.

  • Signed MOU
    In order to strengthen NICT's international presence and promote world-class research standards, it is important to cooperate with leading overseas research institutes and build an internationally open research environment. To this end, NICT has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) as a basis for joint activities with research institutions and universities in other countries, such as joint research, information exchange, joint events, and invitation of researchers.
