The National Center for Critical Information Processing and Storage (NCCIPS) is a federal shared services facility supporting collocated data centers and is managed by the NASA Shared Services Center (NSSC). NCCIPS supports data center requirements of federal agencies and manages those relationships via Interagency Agreements. NCCIPS is a 200,000 sq. ft. secure facility situated on a 64 acre campus within NASA Stennis Space Center in southern Mississippi. NCCIPS was created as a result of a 2005 Congressional initiative to provide secure processing and storage of nationally sensitive, critical, or classified data.

NCCIPS offers federal agencies collocation data center services from a state-of-the-art facility. These on-premise hosting services provide floor space and the supporting infrastructure (power, cooling, and fiber cable plant) with historical facility uptime of 99.999% of the time and conditioned power uptime to IT equipment of 100% since October 2013. NCCIPS offers 24x7x365 availability at a Tier III level with complete redundancy in the electrical distribution system from the power grid to the rack level. Commercial power capacity is 32MVA, backed up by 21MW of diesel generator capacity and numerous Uninterruptible Power Supplies. Data center cooling is also fully redundant.

Leveraging the extensive infrastructure presents federal agencies the potential for significant cost savings. Each NCCIPS customer pays only an apportioned share of the actual data center operations and maintenance cost based on each customer’s footprint in the data center. In addition to this data center floor space cost, customers pay a monthly metered electric bill for actual consumption at a kWh rate lower than the national average. NCCIPS customers also procure and manage communications circuits directly with their provider(s).

NCCIPS continues to grow and be leveraged as a federal shared services facility for collocated federal data centers that reduces cost while enhancing availability, security and sustainability for its growing list of customers. NCCIPS partners with the US General Services Agency in support of the Data Center Optimization Initiative focused on assisting federal agencies in meeting Office of Management & Budget (OMB) requirements to consolidate and modernize IT infrastructure. Additionally, NCCIPS is in a strategic position to assist federal agencies in the implementation of OMB’s Federal Data Center Consolidation Initiative to reduce overall energy consumption and real estate footprint of government data centers.
