Our Approach
METAL’s groundbreaking approach begins with igniting young minds. Through immersive K-12 workshops and university bootcamps, the program opens doors to a world of opportunity, inspiring students to dream big and push the boundaries of what’s possible in metallurgy. By providing hands-on experiences and illuminating diverse career pathways, METAL is sparking a passion for innovation that will propel America forward. We partner with likeminded companies that want to make a dent in the universe.
Led by IACMI, METAL is supported by the Department of Defense and led by the brightest minds in the industry. It is supported by the DoD’s IBAS program, which focuses on strengthening the competitiveness of the U.S. industrial base in response to national security threats and promoting workforce development initiatives. The program seeks to cultivate a resilient domestic workforce capable of sustaining and advancing the nation’s casting and forging capabilities through 2050.
We provide K-12 workshops by partnering with interested schools, hands-on university-level bootcamps, apprenticeship training to companies in the casting and forging industries, and internships. We have partnerships throughout the country that support all of our programs.
“The shrinking supply chain for critical defense materials demands an immediate response. We must rebuild a modern workforce, technologically adept and capable of meeting the demands of our defense industry with efficiency and innovation.”
— Matthew C. Draper, PhD, Technical Director – Metallurgy and Manufacturing, Industrial Base Analysis and Sustainment Program, Office of the Secretary of Defense
