Transportation options
The conference is accessible by both public transit and car.
Caution: It may be cumbersome to take regular public transit (i.e. U-Bahn/S-Bahn) from the airport to the city if you have a checked bag that exceeds 50 cm in diagonal width, as this may be too large to comfortably handle for many individuals and will take up a good amount of space on the train. However, there is no rule from ÖBB/Wiener Linien prohibiting this, and it is still possible despite the possible inconvenience it may cause to you or your fellow passengers.
Be aware that most passengers will be arriving by train directly to Vienna Hauptbahnhof or will take public transit from the airport. If you would like to see if anyone is open to splitting a taxi fare for a ride from the airport to the conference hotels, please ask on the MWStake Matrix channel.
Airport
- Vienna
- Vienna Airport is reachable by the more expensive but fast CAT - City Airport Train or the slower but cheaper S-Bahn. Both arrive at Landstraße Station, where you can take the U3 to Gasometer (towards Simmering).
- Note that ÖBB Railjet trains depart from Vienna Airport and usually have their next stop at Vienna Central Station (German: Wien Hauptbahnhof). From there you have to take the U1 to the city center (Stephansplatz Station) and change into the U3 (towards Simmering) to go to Gasometer.
- Bratislava
- An alternative (reached by some low-cost airlines) is the Bratislava Airport. From there you can take the bus or train.
Public transport
- Austrian Railway (Österreich Bundesbahnen)
- Vienna Subway/U-Bahn (Wiener Linien)
- There are 24, 48 and 72 hour tickets, as well as 7 day tickets, for getting around in Vienna by public transport.
- The tickets are available as both e-tickets and paper tickets. E-tickets are recommended. Download the WienMobil app to buy your tickets and to show them to fare enforcement as needed. (Trains are taken by the honor system. Fare enforcement officers are able to validate your tickets on spot checks.)
- The subway is called the U-Bahn. The line to the Gasometer is called U3 (the Orange Line). Surface-level commuter trains are called the S-Bahn. You will primarily be using the U-Bahn within the city, but may use the S-Bahn at times. These tickets are valid for all rail travel in the Vienna city core zone, including on ÖBB trains within the Vienna city core zone.
