Invalid examples

[edit]

The provided examples are invalid. For example, <phonos text="Cat" /> gives . <phonos wikibase="Q37" lang="lt" /> gives . They should be changed to reflect what we should expect. Theklan (talk) 21:24, 10 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Good point, I've made some updates (fwiw, PhonosInlineAudioPlayerMode is enabled on this project currently) TheresNoTime-WMF (talk) 13:36, 11 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
The examples cross-posted into all WMF wikis are faulty too:
<phonos file="En-uk-English.oga" label="Audio (UK)"/>
@User:TheresNoTime-WMF What is the point with PhonosInlineAudioPlayerMode ? The documentation in incomprehensible. Is it enabled on all WMF wikis? Taylor 49 (talk) 17:53, 16 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Taylor 49, the help page has been updated. Can you have a look and let us know if the documentation explains things better? Looking forward to hearing from you. –– STei (WMF) (talk) 12:56, 21 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
@User:STei (WMF) Thanks. There is some improvement, but the claim "in this mode, only audio files will play" is still incomprehensible. What is the chief difference in functionality between PhonosInlineAudioPlayerMode and non-PhonosInlineAudioPlayerMode, and what is the point/usefulness with the one and the other? "i" too small

[edit]

The superscripted "i" which links to the file description page is too small: German alphabet. Is this "i" hardwired or can it be changed? -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 14:45, 31 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Michael Bednarek: I agree with you, this is an accessibility problem. I strongly recommended against it at T324102 but they weren't having it. Perhaps we should open a phab ticket. Each wiki can customize it at MediaWiki:Phonos-attribution-icon, but it doesn't seem to accept wikicode, which compounds the problem. Nardog (talk) 15:58, 1 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
Filed phab:T346195. Nardog (talk) 01:10, 13 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Agree and strong support. Changing the submicroscopic "i" to "ⓘ" is an improvement. But please add an attribute allowing to override this new "(i)", allowing for empty string to suppress it (so that separate wikitext can be used in order to link directly to Commons). Taylor 49 (talk) 17:26, 16 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Well emptying MediaWiki:Phonos-attribution-icon seems to help but needs sysop rights. Taylor 49 (talk) 17:29, 16 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Taylor 49 @Nardog @Michael Bednarek thank you for raising this issue of accessibility.
@Nardog I see activity in your newer phab:T346195/bug report Phonos attribution link is so small it's barely clickable is receiving some activity by CommTech team. Is it ok if I consider the solution as "in progress"? I will still watch this thread for concerns but I want to know if the major issue of reopening work on the attribution icon is going as you expect. –– STei (WMF) (talk) 13:13, 21 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
I don't understand your question. What would it mean for you to not "consider the solution as 'in progress'", and why should I have any say in whether you will?
I'm the one who created the task, and if I saw any problem with the approach being taken, I would simply voice it on the Phab task or Gerrit, or file another bug report. Nardog (talk) 01:25, 22 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

One more absurd bug -- IPA only

[edit]

If i feed in only the attribute "ipa" but NOT "file" then I get Category:Pages with Phonos rendering errors. The effect is directly observable at Help:Extension:Phonos. Taylor 49 (talk) 21:08, 16 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

@User:UOzurumba (WMF): Is Phonos intended to be used for IPA only? Help:Extension:Phonos suggests YES ... but the outcome is strange. Taylor 49 (talk) 21:12, 16 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hello @Taylor 49 , User:MusikAnimal (WMF) has answered your question in this thread. Thank you! UOzurumba (WMF) (talk) 14:35, 18 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

And another one

[edit]

Phonos redirects from OGG Vorbis files to MP5. The effect is directly observable at Help:Extension:Phonos. This is wrong, OGG Vorbis is still the way more free format and should NOT be converted into MP5. phab:T346508 Taylor 49 (talk) 22:27, 16 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

I think you mean MP3, which like OGG is also non-proprietary and has broader support. I've also replied at phab:T346508. Please let us know how you feel given this new information. MusikAnimal talk 17:49, 17 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the answer. What I still feel is what I wrote at phab yesterday:
The fault is in the proprietary "Ios" and the proprietary "InternerExplorer". I am aware that some of the patents on MP3 expired, still converting Vorbis to (inferior) MP3 is anything else than a gain. As long as users of proprietary stuff are the most privileged group having everything working smoothly and "natively", whereas users of free software and free file formats have trouble, the power of the proprietary companies will not shrink. PNG as a temporary solution until the patent on LZW84 expires, Vorbis as a temporary solution until the patents on MP3 expire, Theora as a temporary solution until the patents on old MPEG expire ... who would want to ever design a free file format under such provisions?
ie Vorbis should not be discarded just because some patent on MP3 expired. Taylor 49 (talk) 14:39, 18 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Audio does not play as a parameter

[edit]

Hello from el.wiktionary, very glad to see the old audio.image again instead of a box. Our tests wikt:el:Συζήτηση προτύπου:ήχος#audio inline 2023. We are interested only in audio inline, not I.P.A. which is a completely different story.

  • <phonos file="En-us-abash.ogg">sound</phonos>
    sound plays fine

But if it is a parameter, <phonos file="{{{2|}}}"></phonos> as in lemma wikt:el:abash it renders empty [[]]. Probably I did not write it properly at wikt:el:Template:audio (I know nothing about Templates). I tried writing with & # 6 0 ; but, I cannot make it work. Could someone come to wikt:el:Template:audio to help us? Because we now have some thousands of pages in wikt:el:Category:Pages with Phonos rendering errors. It is such a pity! We have been waiting for this inline audio for years.
Also, we would rather have info=0 because we do not use this link. Thank you very much for your hard work. Sarri.greek (talk) 11:17, 3 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

You should use {{#tag:…}}, see Help:Extension:Phonos#Simple example. The info link is used not by you, but by readers; you shouldn’t take the ability to look up the file details, not to mention the attribution requirement of most non-PD files. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 18:21, 3 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thank you Tacsipacsi. But now, the code is viewable, still not playing. Also, at our wiktionary, we have our own info page, leading to Commons, and not that intermediate pagelink. Sarri.greek (talk) 19:13, 3 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Sarri.greek: There's a bit of a catch to using the tag form of the invocation: you have to pass an empty first unnamed parameter (for what would otherwise be the content between the opening and closing tags), i.e. for your ήχος template usage it'd look like this:
{{#tag:phonos||file={{{2}}} }}
Sam Wilson 02:40, 4 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
Yeeeees! it works. Thank you so much mister Samwilson for helping small wikis. We are only 5-6 active editors, and noone knows programming. We appreciate some support every now and then, because I just copypaste bits and pieces from here and there to make our templates! Thank you!!!! Sarri.greek (talk) 03:08, 4 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
Mr Samwilson, may I ask: is there a possibility to make that i (info) link to commons? e.g. at lemma wikt:el:abash Not to https://el.wiktionary.org/wiki/%CE%91%CF%81%CF%87%CE%B5%CE%AF%CE%BF:En-us-abash.ogg But directly to the original source https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:En-us-abash.ogg Thank you in advance. Sarri.greek (talk) 03:16, 4 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Sarri.greek and Tacsipacsi: It's not currently possible to change the link, but I think it might be a good thing to add. I've opened task T348093 for this. feel free to add any thoughts there. Sam Wilson 03:04, 4 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thank you Mr Samwilson for your immediate response to solve the link=gotoCommons. The reason is, that the intermediate language-specific pages do not have the Commons-Categories, one cannot search for more recordings, or more contributions of the person who recordedCorrection: Yes, you can see his profile at Commons.
