If you are at #MILCOM2024, join us this morning for our workshop entitled Threat Informed Defense Technologies: Bringing Together Government and Private Sector to Deter Malicious Cyber Actors. We have a packed agenda discussing techniques to deter adversaries and mitigate risk to critical infrastructure and intellectual property. We will explore threat informed defense technologies, such as cyber denial, deception, and adversary engagement. And we will discuss how these opportunities are compounded when public and private sector organizations collaborate to impose costs and consequences on the adversary. Special thank you to... Speakers: Joe Slowik, Travis Cuvelier, Tim Pappa, Quanyan Zhu, Charles Garzoni, Owen Sutter ∴, DSc. and Nancirose Piazza Workshop organizers and chairs: George Roelke, Sanjay Goel, Vahid Behzadan, and Maretta Morovitz
MITRE Engage
Computer and Network Security
A framework for discussing and planning adversary engagement, deception, and denial activities
About us
MITRE Engage is a framework for discussing and planning adversary engagement, deception, and denial activities. Engage is informed by adversary behavior observed in the real world and is intended to drive strategic cyber outcomes. Engage was created to help the private sector, government, and vendor communities to plan and execute the use of adversary engagement strategies and technologies. A beta version of Engage was released in August 2021. We are currently working to incorporate community feedback to update and improve the framework. We plan to MITRE Engage v1 later this year. So excited to see this new call for action from the UK National Cyber Security Centre! "The NCSC is inviting UK organisations to contribute evidence of cyber deception use cases and efficacy to support our long-term research goals." Types of information they are looking to gather includes: - what type, and in what use case and scale - how integration and any bread crumbing is carried out - what outcomes or value deployment had led to including but not limited to: the discovery of a latent breach, the discovery of subsequent breaches, provided enduring value and cost as a proportion of budget If you are a UK organization and can contribute to this, please check out the link below and reach out to thfcd@ncsc.gov.uk. https://lnkd.in/e3CCUKAZ

MITRE Engage is excited to release the next post in our workflow series. https://lnkd.in/ebeVS_Pr Here we discuss the importance of maintaining operational safety and how organizations can gather the right stakeholder together to ensure safe and effective adversary engagement operations. In keeping with our theme that adversary engagement is a team sport, interspersed in our post you will find expert thoughts, suggestions, and insights from Charles Garzoni and Dorian Owens. If you are at SecureWorld Charlotte tomorrow, 4/10, make sure to check out Charles and Dorian's talk where they will dive into the topic of cyber deception and explore the lessons we, as cyber defenders, can learn from the US Army's 23rd HQ Special Troops in World War II and John Jay the father of counterintelligence.

Check out this new blog post from Engage Policy Lead Dylan Hoffmann and Engage Lead Maretta Morovitz on why technologists should take an active role in helping policy makers set cyber policies. Blog post here 👉 https://lnkd.in/egFM8y8W Many techies run away from the policy space, but policy makers need your expert perspective to help define policies that will help, and not hamper, the adversary engagement space grow and mature.

As we continue our #cyberdeceptionday celebrations throughout the week, we want to highlight capabilities, processes, and techniques that organizations can consider when getting started with adversary engagement. As we announced yesterday, throughout the week we will be releasing a series of workflows designed to give defenders a baseline series of steps as they plan their first op. Check out this post by Maretta Morovitz as we explore the first two steps to understand your own organizational strengths, weaknesses, and threats and to understand your adversaries Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures (TTPs). https://lnkd.in/eQk8gjC6

This year #cyberdeceptionday is not just a one day event! We decided to release a series of blog posts in the coming days designed to help organizations get started in the #adversaryengagement space. While the technology itself may be straightforward — often requiring no additional hardware or software — challenges arise in the new planning and operationally focused mindset the technology demands. To streamline this process and facilitate a smoother entry, Engage has developed a series of workflows, each outlining a segment of this process. These workflows are intended to provide defenders with actionable steps to use as a foundation to get started. So join us tomorrow as we release the first two workflows!

It wouldn't be right to let #cyberdeceptionday pass without a shout out to the newest member of the Engage team. Damion Mounts joined the Engage team last year and has taken over the role as the Engage webmaster (double shoutout for all of Damion's hard work getting the Engage site updates out for today's festivities!). Damion started at MITRE as an intern in 2020, joining #teammitre full-time in 2021. In addition to his role as the technical lead for the Engage website, Damion supports a number of MITRE cyber ecosystem capabilities including MITRE ATT&CK and #Caldera. And today is a double celebration for Damion, as it is also his birthday! 🎉 So happy birthday, Damion! Thank you for everything you do for the Engage team!
