About us
Established in 1863, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide humanitarian help for people affected by conflict and armed violence and to promote the laws that protect victims of war. An independent and neutral organization, its mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. It takes action in response to emergencies and promotes respect for international humanitarian law and its implementation in national law. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. One of the most common questions we receive is whether we offer volunteer opportunities. While we do not take on volunteers—focusing solely on paid professionals—you can still contribute to the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement by volunteering with your local Red Cross or Red Crescent Society.
