. DIGITAL TWINS for MANUFACTURING. 🎯 I accepted a challenge to moderate a 2-day marathon discussion on this subject with 36 experts, sponsored by DOE and NSF held last week at #UConn. It was structured as 6 panels of 6 experts each, discussing each subtopic for 2.5 hours, with a hybrid audience of 400+ from 12 countries. 🙏 I place my sincere thanks to George Bollas, Sudarsan R. and the organizing committee for putting their trust in me to moderate this high cost workshop with almost 6 months of planning. My wife Anu Kaur and I had several sleepless nights, as we did not want me to be the single point of failure. I thank her for the unwavering support in this. Several scenarios were cognitively played and backups prepared in advance. I missed having my Industry 4.0 professional partner Dr. Johannes Vrana from Germany at this event. 🙏 After 2 days of engaging event, I can undeniably attribute the meaningful outcome to two things: (A) Panelists willingly shared their knowledge and challenged others, (B) Panelists cooperated with the rules of engagement described upfront. 🙇♂️ I probably offended a few participants by calling a time out, and I am NOT SORRY for that, because I have to respect the time of 200 others in the room as well. I hope they understand. 🎯 This was by far the most intense facilitation of my decade long coaching practice. It helped me immensely in strengthening my skill set. 🙏 NOW, let me place my gratitude to the 36 highly supportive subject experts, who made this workshop a "Best in Class" (as expressed by several attendees) 🙏(Panel 1) Formal Practical Definition of Digital Twins for Manufacturing & Business Value with Keith Foston, John Vickers, Sudarsan Rachuri, Jan Vandenbrande, Bruce Kramer, and Shreyes Melkote. 🙏(Panel 2) Core Characteristics and Capabilities of DT for Manufacturing with Michael O'Keeffe, Pieter van Schalkwyk, Jacquelynn Garofano, Raju Namburu, Yuepeng Zhang, and Mehrdad Mahdavi. 🙏(Panel 3) Best Practices and Standards for Digital Twins with Martin Hardwick, Guodong Shao, Krishna Pattipati, Thorsten Wuest, Bill Peter, and Haresh Malkani. We also had a spot guest on this panel Gabriela Ciocarlie, making the total 37. 🙏(Panel 4) Manufacturing Modalities for Real-Time Simulation & Visualization with Birgit Vogel-Heuser, Scott Kaslusky, Sankaran Mahadevan, Huijuan Dai, Dhanushkodi Mariappan, and Vincent Paquit. 🙏(Panel 5) Education, Workforce Development, Curriculum, and Training for Digital Twins with Pramod Khargonekar, Dawn Tilbury, George Bollas, Amy Thompson, Ragu Athinarayanan, and Antonios Kontsos. 🙏(Panel 6) Implementation Challenges & Collaborative Platforms with Bernard Bewlay, Larry Megan, Soundar Kumara, Elaine Tang, Thomas Kurfess, and John Dyck. 🙏Event support from UConn's Amy Renczkowski Erhart and Janesa Mackin deserves appreciation. 🙏Thankyou for reading it through the end. Now the pictures of the 6 panels mentioned above in the order listed.

Symphony AI Industrial Houston Summit Last Wednesday, November 13th, I had the privilege and pleasure to attend the Symphony AI Industrial (SAI) Houston Summit in partnership with Microsoft, Infosys, and CESMII at the Microsoft Innovation Hub in City Centre. This event followed up on last year's event which launched Symphony AI’s IRIS Foundry Data Ops product and their new Connected Frontline Worker application, which evolved from their Proceedix acquisition. Symphony AI’s CEO, Prateek Kathpal, opened the event with a summary of the Symphony AI Strategy i.e., where they have been and they are going. The company, which is the industrial division of Symphony AI, has a grown considerably in the last year and now boasts a much larger global presence and user footprint. This was followed by an insightful presentation on Industrial AI Trends and Best Practices from Jorge Sebastián Trolli, Global Head of Industrial Automation & Software, Frost & Sullivan. Sebastian and I have been communicating on LinkedIn for some time and thus it was a pleasure to finally meet him in person. Next up was Andy Allison, Head of Product, who led a deep dive into Symphony AI Industrial’s Next Generation Industrial Data Ops Platform, the IRIS Foundry. Srinivas Kuppa, Chief Strategy and Product Officer, and Brian Rubin, Sr. Director of Solutions Engineering, showed off its features and functions in much greater detail than I saw last year, including SAI’s use of knowledge & performance graphs, which are auto-generated. While it is hard to make specific comparisons from demos, given IRIS's pre-built functions and analyses, IRIS appears to be faster and less complicated to implement relative to competing products. And that’s good news because implementing Data Ops architectures can be time and effort-intensive. Thus, the shorter the path to the power of data, the better. The considerable interaction with the audience, particularly the Q&A with operating company attendees, was quite informative and actually pushed the program behind schedule. Andy and Brian also gave us a look inside SAI’s Generative AI for Predictive Insights and Analytics. I slipped away a bit early while Chirag Agrawal, Advanced Analytics Leader, from Novelis, discussed its successful implementation. I missed out on Scott Sallman, Industry Advisor, of Microsoft who addressed the partnership with SAI, and also Infosys, an SAI implementation partner. Thanks to both companies along with CESMII for sponsoring the event. In summary, I remain impressed with SAI’s progress in the Data Ops and Analytics spaces. Last year I characterized SAI’s progress as “Innovation at Speed.” After what I saw last week, I can certainly say that they haven’t slowed down a bit. In short, operating companies looking for a Data Ops and analytics solution platform should give SAI serious consideration. And SAI, keep doing what you are doing.

Successful implementation of Smart Manufacturing (SM) requires AI-ready data at scale. Sthitie Bom at Seagate Technology and I, along with our colleagues at National Science Foundation (NSF) and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), have been benchmarking how to use AI/ML models to tap into invaluable machine, process, product, and material behaviors embedded in existing operational data. A Data-First AI/ML SM strategy emphasizes engineering AI-ready data by consistently collecting, contextualizing, cleaning, normalizing, protecting, aggregating, assessing, and selecting it to draw out operational value refined from years of experience even when the physics may not be fully understood. An important example is in semiconductor manufacturing where AI/ML models predict complex metrology outcomes to improve operations, products, margins, and staff productivity. Simulated data based on modeling assumptions is not likely to replicate this value soon. Too many AI/ML solutions overemphasize algorithms without first engineering the data. Learning, unlearning, validating, and adjusting models when using and reusing data remains an art. Instead, we have demonstrated that systematically engineering data collaboratively can produce effective solutions with immediate value. If data is not over-engineered, results that are not readily explainable at a reasonable cost with current physics offer valuable insights to improve models. By tackling data access at scale, a Data-First strategy leverages the experiences of other industries that AI has transformed. Data siloing must be relaxed for an AI/ML Data-First strategy to be effective. Data siloing is a costly, constraining legacy manufacturing practice that undercuts the value of AI/ML. At a machine or operational level, siloing often results in limited solutions in which the data and investments are not transferable to other applications. Siloing within factories, supply chains, equipment builders, and solution providers restricts access to data, locks out the advantages of scale, inhibits product optimization, and shortchanges all stakeholders. Data related to IP and trade secrets needs to be protected, but it is equally important to manage value while mitigating the risk of collaborating on a data and model ‘supply chain.’ A Data-First SM strategy addresses these as implementation integration requirements. It sets a course for using AI by asking the right questions about new business frameworks that automate AI-ready data engineering and use scale to increase the accessibility and value of data.  These observations are honed within an NSF/NIST sponsored workshop (NSF award 2334590) organized by Sthitie Bom at Seagate Technology and Jim Davis at UCLA Office of Advanced Research Computing (CESMII) together with Bruce Kramer (NSF), Said Jahanmir (NIST), Gregory Vogl (NIST) and Don Ufford (NIST).
