Next-generation construction sites that create excitement
A major problem in Japan’s construction industry is the shortage of workers. The aging population and the declining number of young people are problems for the entire domestic industry, so the shortage of workers at construction sites can’t be easily resolved. It is important to improve per-person productivity and to have people widely understand that construction sites are attractive workplaces. In December 2015, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism announced "i-Construction," and the change began. Since then, companies have attempted to introduce various technologies on trial and have worked to develop new technologies to improve productivity on their own. Although it has only been seven years, the efforts have steadily paid off, and the situation on construction sites has changed significantly.
In the March 2023 issue of the JSCE Magazine, we featured new approaches and technological developments at construction sites from two round-table discussions and eight articles. Through this feature, we would like the readers to feel the attitude and spirit of the construction industry, which is constantly taking on new challenges, and to have expectations for the future of the industry.
