Dr Joy Jacqueline Pereira is Co-Chair of Working Group III of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). In the Sixth Assessment Report she was the Vice-Chair of Working Group II on impacts, adaptation, and vulnerabilities. Previously she has served as a Coordinating Lead Author for Chapter 24 on Asia of the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report (AR5), Lead Author for the IPCC AR5 Synthesis Report and a Review Editor for the 2012 IPCC Special Report on Managing the Risks of Extreme Events and Disasters to Advance Climate Change Adaptation (IPCC SREX). Dr Pereira obtained a Ph.D. from University of Malaya in 1996, Master of Science from University of Leicester in 1991 and Bachelor of Science with Honours from University Kebangsaan Malaysia in 1989, specializing in the field of geoscience. She is a Professor and Principal Research Fellow at the Southeast Asia Disaster Prevention Research Initiative of the Institute for Environment and Development in University Kebangsaan Malaysia (SEADPRI-UKM) and Fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia. Her research covers disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation and mineral resource management for sustainable development, with a focus on linking science to policy. In 2009, Joy Pereira led the team that developed the National Policy on Climate Change under the aegis of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment Malaysia. She also developed the National Disaster Risk Reduction Action Plan in conjunction with the National Security Council of the Prime Minister’s Department.
