Title : On the Role of Interference in the Design of Next Generation Wireless Communication Systems

Abstract :

Users that transmit on the same frequency interfere with each other. Thus, interference is an integral aspect of wireless communication systems that strive for high spectral efficiencies by reusing the scarce spectrum as aggressively as possible. It has shaped the design of cellular systems from the erstwhile 2G era to the upcoming 5G era. We focus on understanding its broad influence on the next generation of wireless systems. We bring out how interference and, equally importantly, the information available about it affect the design of three promising and emerging technologies.

The first technology is underlay spectrum sharing, which enables multiple wireless systems to co-exist and reuse the scarce, yet paradoxically underutilized, spectrum. It enables a lower priority secondary user to transmit simultaneously with a higher priority primary user, but under tight constraints on the interference it generates. The second technology is full-duplex radio, which doubles the spectral efficiency by enabling a wireless node to transmit and receive simultaneously on the same band. The third technology is device-to-device communications, which enables two mobiles to talk directly with each other without routing their signals through the base station. We highlight the new sources of interference that arise in these technologies, and the common threads in the design of interference-aware algorithms and protocols for them.

About the Speaker :

Neelesh B. Mehta is a Professor in the Department of Electrical Communication Engineering at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. He received his B. Tech. degree from IIT Madras in 1996 and his Masters’ and Ph.D. degrees from the California Institute of Technology, USA, in 1997 and 2001, respectively. From 2001 to 2007, he worked in the USA at AT&T Research Labs, Broadcom Corp., and Mitsubishi Electric Research Labs. His research focuses on wireless communications.

He is a Fellow of IEEE, INSA, INAE, and NASI. He is a recipient of the IIT Roorkee’s Khosla National Award in Engineering, Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award, Hari Om Ashram Prerit Vikram Sarabhai Research Award, and DST-Swarnajayanti Fellowship. He currently serves as the Chair of the Steering Committee of the IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications, and is a member of the IEEE ComSoc Awards committee. He served on the Executive Editorial Committee of the IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications during 2014-17 and was its Chair during 2017-18. He served on the Board of Governors of the IEEE Communications Society from 2012-15.
