Peace Lecture Marathon by Sadayuki Tsuchiya, Ambassador of Peru to Japan

5th Peace Lecture Marathon

The 5th Peace Lecture Marathon was held on October 4, 2019, at the Faculty Club on the Higashi-Hiroshima Campus, inviting Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Sadayuki Tsuchiya, who is stationed in Peru.

Ambassador Tsuchiya gave a lecture titled "The War and Peace Experience of Japanese Peruvians en el Perú," in which he recounted the history of hardships faced by the Nikkei Japanese people. Since 1899, a total of more than 18,000 people from Japan have come to Peru as contract farmers, some of whom became successful in business in urban areas. However, when World War II broke out, their personal assets were frozen, and they were forcibly sent to concentration camps in the United States. Ambassador Tsuchiya shared such an example and other hardships that Japanese descendants have endured.

After the war, he introduced how the Nikkei community recovered while assimilating into Peruvian society. He said, “I hope to build a relationship where Japan and Peru can develop in cooperation with each other, with diversity as the foundation.”

Ambassador Tsuchiya is from Hiroshima Prefecture and has served as Vice Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT) and Administrative Vice Minister of MEXT. He also served as an external member of the Hiroshima University Management Council. After his speech, President Mitsuo Ochi presented him with an honorary doctorate.
