“Toyako Onsen” is a hot spring area that boasts of having the third highest amount of hot spring water in Japan, and one of the most famous tourist resorts of Hokkaido.
Lake Toya is a crater lake made by the collapse of a volcano. Now an ice-free lake of the northern limit along with Lake Shikotsu, it is located within Shikotsu-Toya National Park. The name “Toyako” stems from the aborigine Ainu language, meaning “hill” and “lake” respectively.
Two breathtaking views, one from Miharashidai Observatory between JR Toya Station and the primary hot spring area, and the second from Sailo Observatory, are a must-see. The quite famous Hokkaido spots of Mt. Showa-shinzan and Mt. Usu are just nearby Toyako Onsen.

Disaster Monuments at Konpira Craters・Konpira Craters・Craters at the Foot of Mt. Nishiyama
The eruption of Mt. Usu that occurred in March of 2000 is an experience which is passed down to the next generations. As the remains serve for the purpose of reducing future potential natural disaster, it is now kept in its original state as a walking path and reminder of the disastrous explosion.
You can see firsthand the damage and suffering caused by the eruption in things like bridges that were swept away, the volcanic mud flow, and buildings that were buried by it.
Restaurant Boyotei
In the ever-changing hot spring town of Toyako, we believe in protecting the traditions while taking into consideration support for the new era.
