Blackwing7 News on 7/7
There’s something special about the number 7.
Tribe7, makers of Full Frame, tunable Blackwing7 lenses are especially attuned to sevens. Initially, there were seven focal lengths, each ending in a seven: 27, 37, 47, 57, 77, 107 and 137 mm. An additional focal length, 20.7mm, has been introduced.
And so, on 7/7 of this year, Tribe7 announces that Blackwing7 lenses will be distributed exclusively in North America by AbelCine. The news follows on the heels of TRIBE7 announcements that Second Reef GmbH is the exclusive distributor of the Blackwing7 lenses in Europe. And, CVP is the exclusive distributor in the UK. read more…
The Business of the Business: CVP
Fitzrovia, London. January 28, 2020. Jon Fry, Darren Simpson, Yevgeny Subbotin, Aaron George and I met in the nicely appointed club at CVP Creative Space on Charlotte Street. As often happens in our world of moveable feasts, we soon adjourned to continue the discussion at Berners Tavern.
In a large elegant room festooned floor to ceiling with paintings, the menu included traditional British pork pie prepared tableside with showmanship, chargrilled Buccleuch Estate Scottish beef with triple cooked chips, battered Cornish haddock with crushed peas. As anyone familiar with this CVP and FDT cast of characters, the drinks and wine flowed copiously. read more…

Getting Back to Work
You probably tried to read various guidelines on going back to work on set or location. Your skepticism increased with each “it is highly recommended.” And you plowed through additional palaverous proposals of precautions for picking up production. Now, I’m no more qualified to give advice on getting back to work or working safely than some of the “experts” and magical thinkers expounding on TV, despite my few years in pre-med studies and a healthy skepticism of sheltering in place in a stunt coordinator’s “designated safe zone.” That’s too often the place where debris unexpectedly lands from an exploding car in a movie stunt, despite assurances to the contrary.
CVP Large Format Test with ARRI
CVP recently hosted a Large Format event in collaboration with ARRI at the CVP & ARRI Creative Space. The CVP team set up a test with the ALEXA LF, ALEXA Mini (fitted with LPL mount) and ARRI Signature primes. The lenses were 18, 25, 35, 47, 75 and 125 mm. The event was overseen by CVP Account Manager Aaron George, who prior to joining CVP in 2017, spent almost 12 years at ARRI as UK Head of Camera Service. read more…

All Roads Lead to CVP
CVP has been doing business for 30 years in the United Kingdom and Europe. Now they have opened a veritable playground for camera crews in a unique showroom in Newman Street, London. Their CVP Fitzrovia townhouse is called CVP Creative Experience and has five floors of production equipment from major manufacturers, including Sony, Canon, ARRI, RED, ZEISS, Panasonic, Blackmagic and many more.
With NAB 2019 approaching, it’s good to review CVP’s impressive showing at BSC Expo 2019. Their exhibit serves as a model for many expos to come. The exhibit area was thoughtfully laid out–with lots of space and room to move. There was a lens bar, Macro area with little live creatures, studio setup area on tripods and heads, handheld arena, gimbal and drone park, monitor wall, and an enormous bar and lounge area. read more…
