Opportunities for Students
ASLO Student Travel Grants
ASLO student members are invited to apply for a student travel grant. Upon registration and abstract submission, students will be offered the opportunity to apply for a Student Travel Award to help defray the cost of travel and/or registration for the meeting. To be eligible, applicants must be an ASLO student member, and the application must be completed at the same time as the meeting registration and abstract submission. Travel awards will be paid in US dollars only. The information collected on the application will be used to weigh applicants in a randomized drawing for travel grants.
ST01- Student Mixer and Speed Networking

Come out and meet fellow students at the student mixer! One drink ticket will be provided for those 21+ years old. We will have some structured icebreakers and a few rounds of speed networking to facilitate building connections with your peers.
ST02 - Student Research Communication Workshop: Quick and Effective Talks

Sandra Klemet-N'guessan will be leading this workshop on crafting quick and effective talks. Scientific talks are commonly constrained to be 10 minutes or less at large conferences, and even shorter formats, including lightning talks and 3 Minute Thesis competitions, are popular options at universities for students to showcase their research. These short presentation formats are one of the most challenging ways to share research effectively. Communicating science clearly within a time constraint is a necessary skill set for students at any stage to improve their ability to share their research. This workshop will have time allotted to practice the learned strategies with fellow students and receive feedback on their communication attempts while learning about each other’s research and communication styles. Boxed lunches will be provided on a first-come, first-serve basis.
ST03 - Navigating ASLO Student Member Benefits

Come talk to students and representatives of ASLO programs to learn about the opportunities offered to student members. Benefits for students range from financial support to meetings, international collaboration, networking, professional development, and awards. There will be a quick introduction of representatives from each program. Then students will be able to meet the people who organize or have participated in mentorship, leadership, and fellowship programs of ASLO, and discuss their experiences and benefits of those programs. We will have a link to the bulletin and flyers where students can find descriptions of the different programs and can determine which programs interest them most. This will be an interactive setup so attendees can move around the room, and talk to people connected to programs. Boxed lunches will be provided on a first-come, first-serve basis.
