CEO Bio and Headshot

Short Bio

Chris Shaw is the CEO and co-founder of Advanced Navigation, a navigation and autonomous systems technology company.

Long Bio

Chris Shaw is the CEO and co-founder of Advanced Navigation, a global leader in navigation and autonomous systems.

Chris earned his degrees in business and electronic engineering from the University of Western Australia graduating with First Class Honors. During this time, he was a research and development engineer at Entecho, a company focused on developing air taxis and aerial vehicles. Following this, he joined Cyber Technology, a company specializing in autonomous vehicles.

Upon discovering a gap in the market for small robust high performance autonomous navigation solutions, Chris co-founded Advanced Navigation with business partner Xavier Orr. Since 2012, the company has experienced great success and has progressed into several deep technology fields, including robotics, inertial, photonic and quantum sensing, artificial intelligence, underwater acoustics, and GPS antennas and receivers.

Revolutionary Digital FOG Technology

Advanced Navigation’s Boreas inertial navigation system (INS), featuring revolutionary patented technology, is the future of fibre-optic gyroscopes (FOG).

The Boreas Series combines cutting-edge closed-loop DFOG and accelerometer technologies, with a dual antenna RTK GNSS receiver.

The sensors are fused with Advanced Navigation’s revolutionary sensor fusion algorithm allowing the system to extract significantly more information from the data. The series is designed for control applications, with a high level of health monitoring and instability prevention to ensure stable and reliable data.

The system features ultra-fast gyro compassing, acquiring and maintaining an accurate heading under the most demanding conditions, without requiring GNSS to operate. Based on its revolutionary DFOG technology, Boreas delivers a 40% reduction in size, weight, power and cost (SWaP-C), relative to competing systems.

This patented technology opens the possibility for adopting FOG INS systems across a much broader range of vehicular applications, particularly autonomous vehicles and submarines, where weight and size are at a premium. This is particularly critical for long GNSS-denied missions, where crewed and uncrewed vehicles may be traveling for hundreds of days.

The technology is well suited for assured PNT (aPNT) applications across subsea, marine, land and air applications.

The space-qualified variant of this technology, the Boreas X90, will be supporting NASA in its inspirational space endeavors. It will enable spacecraft to autonomously explore the Moon and beyond to Mars, help uncover scientific discoveries, unlock the lunar economy and inspire a new generation of space explorers.

Hydrus, Underwater Drone

Hydrus, Advanced Navigation’s micro autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) is a revolution in underwater robotics, developed to open exciting frontiers in ocean exploration.

The design of Hydrus synthesizes numerous bleeding-edge navigational and data capture technologies with highly developed and sophisticated artificial neural network intelligence. Deployable by a single person, 3D missions can be planned in minutes, without specific knowledge or training. The sonar communication capabilities allow users to monitor and adjust missions in real time, and upon completion, data is wirelessly retrieved using a laptop.

Hydrus is an elegant solution to a complex, expensive problem. It has the potential to discover why some of the ocean’s greatest climate change events are occurring, inspect offshore wind farms, detect, localize and classify marine species and subsea assets, while monitoring change in any underwater environment.

Developed to ensure professional grade underwater imagery and data is accessible to everyone, Hydrus is the drone revolution underwater. Discover more here.
