The National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) is the leading human rights organization for all individuals with Down syndrome. NDSS envisions a world in which all people with Down syndrome have the opportunity to enhance their quality of life, realize their life aspirations, and become valued members of welcoming communities. Founded in 1979, our activities include shaping and advocating for improved public policy, increased public resources and services for people with Down syndrome; working in partnership with our affiliates and other support organizations; improving educational opportunities for individuals with Down syndrome; advancing basic, clinical and applied research; and implementing a national public awareness strategy.

Honor Tribute

Looking for a special way to honor a loved one or celebrate a special occasion? Honor gifts are a perfect way for you to send birthday greetings, recognize weddings and births, or honor a personal hero in your life. Your gift not only allows you to pay tribute to someone special, it funds programs that benefit individuals with Down syndrome across the country.

Once a donation is made, NDSS sends a special tribute card explaining to the recipient that a gift has been made in his/her honor.

If you choose to partner with NDSS for a special occasion, a template can be prepared for you that highlights your generosity to NDSS. For example, many friends of NDSS choose to donate money in lieu of purchasing wedding favors and a note is included at the seats of their guests.

Memorial Tribute

A gift to the National Down Syndrome Society in memory of a loved one is a wonderful way to honor life and express sympathy, while sharing concern for an important cause. Your gift not only allows you to pay tribute to someone special, it funds programs that benefit individuals with Down syndrome across the country. Stock Donations

Transferring stock is an excellent way to support the National Down Syndrome Society. A gift of securities provides significant benefits, such as:

Increased value for your gift to NDSS and decreased cost to you

A charitable income tax deduction for the fair market value of the gifted securities

Elimination of capital gains tax that would ordinarily become due if you had sold the appreciated securities on the open market and donated the proceeds of the sale to NDSS

Planned Giving

It is never too early to start planning. Everyone should create a will or an estate plan to ensure that their possessions will be distributed as they desire after they have passed on.

Planning a gift to NDSS gives you the opportunity to make a lasting investment in the promising future of individuals with Down syndrome, while providing benefits to you and your family. Significant tax savings can be realized through these gift plans. A planned gift – whether it is designated to a specific program or unrestricted for use at the discretion of NDSS – may be made through a will or through a charitable gift plan.

A bequest is a transfer of property by will – for example, cash, stocks, bonds, real estate, works of art, or antiques – to an individual or to a charitable organization.

To make a gift to NDSS from your estate, you will need to sign a new will and suggest to your attorney that the following language be included:

“I give, devise, and bequeath to the National Down Syndrome Society, 8 E 41st Street, 8th Floor, New York, NY 10017, the sum of $_______ (or otherwise describe the gift or specify a percentage of the estate) to be used for its general purposes.”

NDSS recommends that you consult with your legal and financial advisors before proceeding with any planned giving, and we would be delighted to explore planned giving options with you and encourage you to discuss the applications of planned giving approaches with your attorney or tax advisor.

NDSS Your Way (Peer-to-peer Fundraising)

NDSS Your Way is an online program geared towards independent fundraisers interested in raising money on behalf of the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS). Participants in this program create personalized fundraising web pages in support of an event or individual pursuit. Each individual event is hosted independently and oversight is provided by NDSS.

Fundraisers are invited to create a customizable web page in one of four categories—Compete, Celebrate, Create and College—no matter which category you choose, your personal page can pay tribute to someone who inspires and motivates you.

As a Fundraiser, you are helping to further the mission of the National Down Syndrome Society. NDSS works to create a culture that values, accepts and includes the more than 400,000 Americans with Down syndrome. NDSS envisions a world in which all people with Down syndrome have the opportunity to enhance their quality of life, realize their life aspirations, and become valued members of welcoming communities.
