“Life with Spina Bifida has been the most wonderful battle I’ve ever fought. Although the struggles of having SB can be incredibly tough, it has completely formed who I am as a person. It has helped mold me into a stronger and more compassionate woman. I don’t take things for granted, and I cherish every single day. A disability should not be something that defines you. It should be something that teaches you, pushes you, and builds you. That is what it has done for me. I joined my high school’s show choir. I went on a mission trip to New Orleans to help reconstruct houses after Hurricane Katrina. And I graduated as a Master Stylist from cosmetology school. Those are things I never thought I would be able to do. But I have realized that I am capable of doing anything I want to, even if it’s in a different way. My advice to those living with Spina Bifida is not to be ashamed of who they are, and if you want to change the world, change it!” -Amiranda Brynteson. “When I was 20 weeks pregnant, the ultrasound tech had trouble seeing parts of my baby's head. My son was diagnosed with Cerebellar Hypoplasia, and I spent the remainder of my pregnancy learning as much as I could about that. At 37 weeks, I was induced because my baby wasn’t growing as he should, and I gave birth to my sweet baby boy, Chase. The Obstetrician noticed right away that he had Spina Bifida. To date, Chase has had 10 surgeries. He has developmental, speech, and motor delays, but he ambulates well on his own with assistance from AFO’s. We are lucky to have a team of doctors, teachers, therapists, family, and friends who help Chase every day, and he leaves an impact on everyone he meets. While this is not the life that I was expecting to have with my first (and only) child, I couldn’t imagine life any other way.
