#TBT DYK that during the 1960s, these Census Bureau clerks studied microfilmed census records as part of the Census Bureau’s Age Search? We continue to provide an "age search" service to the public. For a congressionally mandated fee, we will search the publicly available 1910 to 1940 census records and the confidential records from the 1950 to 2010 counts for the person named on the record, his or her heirs, or legal representative.

Following a successful search, the person ...submitting the request will receive a certified census transcript that will usually contain the named person’s age, sex, race, state or country of birth, and relationship to the householder. This transcript can be used to qualify for social security and other retirement benefits; apply for a passport; prove relationships to settle estates; serve as a substitute when a birth certificate is unavailable; and for genealogical research.
