Abstract
The collision of overheight vehicles with overpasses, such as bridges and tunnels, causes loss of life, injuries to motorists, and harm to structural members or construction formwork on highways and other routes. The repair of the damaged portion of overpass/bridges/tunnels is a resource and time-demanding process, which causes traffic halts and delays in most cases. We investigate and pilot three intelligent detection systems to identify and alert the drivers of overheight vehicles. The systems can direct the driver through a flashing light, speaker, and information board to take an alternate route. The findings from this research can assist in installing intelligent systems for detecting and safely directing overheight vehicles ahead of an inevitable overhead structure, regardless of the environmental conditions, for example, rain, fog, and speed. The goal is to establish reliable and intelligent detection/alert systems, to minimize the incidence of a crash triggered by overheight vehicles.
