Abstract
The performance of the I/O subsystem is becoming more and more important in modern systems, since the CPU capacity increases rapidly. In this paper the IBM-370—XA I/O architecture is described from the point of view of a performance analyst, and suggestions are given to improve the system.
Two of the proposed systems, called the “buffered disk system” and the “local disk controller system”, are discussed in detail. At the expense of modifications to the hardware of the 370—XA I/O subsystem they provide a much better performance: the I/O access rate may easily be doubled or even tripled. Full compatibility with the 370XA channel subsystem, and with the MVS/XA operating system is maintained.
The performance improvements achievable with disk caching are investigated, both for the existing control unit based system, and for the proposed local disk controller system.
