Impact of Technology 2024 - IEEE Transmitter

The speed of technology advancement and adoption has never been faster.

We surveyed global technology leaders and asked our Impact Creators for their insights on what to expect.

“The Impact of Technology in 2024 and Beyond: an IEEE Global Study” surveyed 350 CIOs, CTOs, IT directors and technology leaders in the U.S., China, U.K., India and Brazil at organizations with over 1,000 employees across multiple industries September 19-23, 2023.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Artificial Intelligence in its Many Forms Will be the Most Important Area of Technology in 2024

Whether creating realistic text, images or music; automating algorithm improvements, mimicking human decision-making using artificial neural networks; or automating text translation and speech recognition, AI use will continue to expand and be widespread.

QUANTUM

Don’t Count Quantum Out

Generative AI may continue to dominate the technology landscape, but other technologies such as quantum will have significant, if less-noticed impacts. A majority of respondents agree, in 2024 quantum computing will gain the most attention for significantly higher computing power — a trillion times higher than that of today’s most advanced supercomputers – as well as for its application to post-quantum cryptography and cybersecurity.

CYBERSECURITY

Cybersecurity Concerns Continue

The top three cybersecurity concerns in 2024 remain the same as last year: data center vulnerability, cloud vulnerability, and security issues related to the mobile and hybrid workforce / employees using their own devices. But other cybersecurity concerns will rise in 2024, including ransomware attacks (37% in 2024, up from 30% in 2023), phishing attacks (35% in 2024, up from 25% in 2023) and insider threats (26% in 2024, up from 19% in 2023).

PREDICTION: “The development of AI in the coming years will be linked to the priorities described in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which focus on bringing health everywhere and in a preventive manner, reducing climate problems and increasing innovation in the production chain, which includes increased supply chain efficiency.”

Cristiane Agra Pimentel
IEEE Senior Member

PREDICTION: “AI helps detect and predict events quickly, such as outbreaks, unauthorized or unsafe drone operations, bias, cybersecurity threats and malicious activities - driving innovation and competition in a range of application domains, including environmental sustainability, space tech and exploration, smart cities, manufacturing, agriculture, energy, healthcare and medicine, and transportation.”

Houbing Song
IEEE Fellow, IEEE Computer Society

PREDICTION: “AI in software development can provide a significant productivity boost. It can also result in better products. For example, AI can be used to complete tasks that most engineers dread, such as providing detailed documentation and creating unit tests for their code.”

Nicholas Napp
IEEE Senior Member

PREDICTION: “5G will change the way we connect in 2024, and impact existing industries that rely on connection, such as healthcare, education, transportation and many more because of superfast broadband, ultra-reliable low latency communication, massive machine-type communications, high reliability/availability and efficient energy usage.”

Ayesha Iqbal
IEEE Senior Member

PREDICTION: “The race for quantum technologies is getting faster, and there are many huge players interested in it. Even if most (or all) results have no immediate impact yet, the quest for applications in the next few years is likely to shape the future.”

Marcos Simplicio
IEEE Member

PREDICTION: “Realistically, the use of AI in cybersecurity will help to reduce the punishing cognitive load on tier 1 security operation center (SOC) analysts and incident responders. Rather than having to comb through a needlestack looking for a needle, AI promises to automate much of the correlation across vast amounts of data that humans struggle with.”
