Lengthening blocks

[edit]
This is a continuation of this thread: Recent barrage of IP edits: Ongoing (now archived).

The latest instance is User:2607:FEA8:245F:F800:C01E:FA1A:E3D4:710A. As we have now been issuing blocks since July, apparently without effect, I am now blocking for 6 months rather than three. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:05, 19 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Pigsonthewing: For IPv6 addresses, blocking a single address won't be really effective, because it changes frequently. Please see the following essay for advice on dealing with disruption by users on IPv6 addresses: en:User:TonyBallioni/Just block the /64.
Also, I would recommend creating a new edit/abuse filter, as suggested by DannyS712 and OhanaUnited: [1], [2]. Korg (talk) 15:37, 19 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. I have been meaning to figure out how to do range blocks; and have now - with sadness - blocked this one for six months.
I agree also about the edit filter, but that remains outside my skill-set. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:56, 19 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Judging that the latest round of vandalism occurred just 2 weeks ago (on December 20) and we're essentially playing a "whack a mole" with this user, has the abuse filter been implemented? And should we escalate by contacting the ISP's abuse department by email? OhanaUnitedTalk page 03:59, 2 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
I missed that; what IP was used? I wouldn't expect an ISP to bother about this. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:41, 2 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
If you are on the IP's contribution page, click on "WHOIS" at the bottom, it will reveal which ISP the IP belongs to. The ISP is Rogers Communications, one of the three largest ISPs in Canada. There are cases in Wikipedia where long-term abuse was reported to the ISP's abuse department (see example). It's a long shot, but unless we put in an edit filter, we will continue to waste time cleaning up this person's mess. OhanaUnitedTalk page 15:39, 2 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. I know how to find an ISP from an IP (address). The question was "What IP (address)"?
LTA in such cases generally consists of things such as large-scale vandalism, threats or uploading illegal images (the example you cite includes death threats). Not edits which are simply not compliant with our style guide. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 19:00, 4 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

I have just blocked 2605:8000:0:0:0:0:0:0/19 for a repeat of this behaviour. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:43, 13 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hello fellow administrators! Just for fun, here's an XTool log of all of the administrator actions we made in 2024:

Please note that the list also includes the administrator actions statistics for our 6 bureaucrats, since all of them are also part of our 23 administrators.

Strand speedy delete

[edit]

Heya we have two items in speedy delete for Embrik Strand which I want to claify. I am guessing that what is wanted is the template deleted not the mainspace. If I delete the template its going to break the mainspace as the template is still being used. Though possibly this is the idea that it should be removed. Just want to check as this will require some cleanup to do. I assume the mainspace page is not really wanted to be deleted. Cheers Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 00:32, 31 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

Yes, it is certainly the case that User:Sjl197 just wants the template deleted. I think a better solution would be to move Template:Strand, 1911b to Template:Strand, 1911. —Justin (koavf)TCM 00:39, 31 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Pigsonthewing: Since you're smarter than me. This is an interesting phenomenon. The problem is that when you add {{Delete}} to a page, it includeonlys the category for speedy deletion, but if you apply {{Delete}} to a template and that template is included in a page, then the page it is included on is marked for speedy deletion, too. I'm trying to wrap my head around if there is a way to noinclude and onlyinclude so that this doesn't happen, but again, I'm not very smart. Do you have any solutions? —Justin (koavf)TCM 00:41, 31 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
I do not mind that the page using the template also got flagged as it notifies us of this issue and we can take care of that and not delete something without seeing the consequences. Though the entire mainspace appearing in the Speedy Delete Cat because one template is under such a request risks someone just deleting everuything without looking. It would be preferable if I think if the Delete template when applied to a template flagged any transclusions of the template so as to assist in the decision of how to proceed. I can understand the wish to go to Strand , 1911b rather than just 1911 though, when authors have multiple papers from a given year there is a tendancy for the lettering to become established so it may be preferable to allow this and delete the Strand , 1911 template. But that could go either way. Cheers Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 00:52, 31 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Faendalimas:
Hi all. My request was somehow to eliminate redundancy of misduplication of Template:Strand, 1911 = Template:Strand, 1911b.
I put my "deletion" request onto Template:Strand, 1911 - not sure if i could have done anything better at my end to clarify, i thought the request on the template was clear for being the template. That is still being 'actively' used on the author page Embrik Strand if that's the 'mainspace' refered to - i anticipated any of you experienced ones could work it out :) I moved a link of Araneus wokamus from that "Strand, 1911" to Strand, 1911b and edited the taxon page - it was just practically easier to move one link that way than vice versa. Also, it seemed better to me to have continued use of "1911b" than nothing for that letter "b". If all goes to "Template:Strand, 1911" then so be it, hope that clarifies my thoughts from user end. Sjl197 (talk) 01:44, 31 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
It's very early morning here in Sweden and I'm perhaps a bit too tired to wrap my head around all the details right now, but couldn't we simply move Template:Strand, 1911b to Template:Strand, 1911, and then move it back to Template:Strand, 1911b again..? –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 03:55, 31 January 2025 (UTC).Reply
I've added the ﹤noinclude﹥...﹤/noinclude﹥ tags to Template:Strand, 1911, per @Christian Ferrer's suggestion. This indeed removes the Embrik Strand page from the Candidates for speedy deletion category, as well as the note about deletion on the author page itself.
Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 08:15, 31 January 2025 (UTC).Reply
The more easy and logic before to add {{Delete}} to a template is to remove that template from where it is transcluded, otherwise after the deletion you will get a red link, e.g. {{Ggggg}}, every where the template was transcluded. Christian Ferrer (talk) 08:38, 31 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
Yes and no. Doing so implies that the template will be deleted, which of course isn't always the case – especially when the deletion request is made by a new or otherwise unexperienced user. We would then always have to remember to add the template back to the page where it was earlier transcluded, if the community decides that the template shouldn't be deleted.
A safer method is to always also check the "What links here" page (eg. Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:Strand, 1911) and always delete the template from those pages as well. Sometimes a template may be used on a huge number of pages, in which case I recommend using the semi-automatic JavaScript Wiki Browser ("JWB") instead of deleting them manually. The JWB script (information at enWP here) is a "light" version of the AutoWikiBrowser ("AWB").
JWB is browser-based (AWB is not), hence it can be used without downloading any extra software. Using either AWB or JWB requires the user to first register and/or request a permission, however all of Wikispecies' administrators are automatically approved (so no need to register). –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 09:16, 31 January 2025 (UTC).Reply
@Sjl197: Ok this is  Done, I deleted the template, removed it from the page its transcluded in and ran with keeping Strand, 1911b as this is in keeping with the other templates on the page. Cheers Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 13:01, 4 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

Rash of IP nonsense

[edit]

As you can see above in a couple of threads and in Recent Changes, there has been some trash posted by IPs acting foolishly lately, including some stuff that has stayed up for a few days (see my logs if you need some examples). For those who are motivated, I suggest maybe making a regular reminder to check a URI https://species.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:RecentChanges?userExpLevel=unregistered&hidebots=1&translations=filter&hideWikibase=1&limit=1000&days=30&urlversion=2 or https://species.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:RecentChanges?userExpLevel=unregistered&hidebots=1&reviewStatus=unpatrolled&translations=filter&hideWikibase=1&limit=1000&days=30&urlversion=2 and see what kind of silliness may have been posted recently. I will say that I'm pleasantly surprised to see a number of hi quality IP edits and I'm grateful to everyone who wants to contribute constructively. I'm also grateful to my fellow admins who have real lives but spend their precious time trying to make this site a better place. —Justin (koavf)TCM 07:04, 1 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

CMS - Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals

[edit]

One of my co-authors in the series of papers I co wrote on Checklists and global species lists who was chair of the IUBS committee on the same has asked me if Wikispecies would be willing to include data from them.

"With CMS, I am helping assemble an authoritative list of range states for each listed species. When done, is this something that can be added into Wikispecies? Also can Wikispecies be persuaded to take on the consolidated global taxonomy for birds when it appears later this year?" sent today from Stephen who is on the Secretariat of the CMS.

I have asked him if he is a Wikimedia editor anywhere and if so he should check in and also talk about this. If not I will see if he would like to make an account. He is very busy so would likely mostly contribute as an advisory role.

I think its a good opportunity to obtain some first hand detailed information on the species relevant to this convention. It also would force us to deal with a topic that has been up in the air for years ie distributions of species. Cheers Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 00:44, 12 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

Oh as an addit the Consolidated Taxonomy of Birds is the result of several years of negotiation to consolodate the 4 main Bird Checklists into one authoritative List. We would get it first hand directly from them. Cheers Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 00:46, 12 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the information. It all sounds good to me. –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 12:21, 12 February 2025 (UTC).Reply
As Scott notes above, I am Counsellor for birds with CMS, I have been asked to help create a list of validated range states for all migratory species and thought that it would be helpful for Wiki sites to have such information once available. I am also wondering whether Wikipedia is likely to follow the new consolidated bird list being developed under the auspices of the International Ornithologists Union. AviList, as it will be called, will be available in May and brings together the IOC list, the Clements/Cornell/e-Bird list and the BirdLife International/HBW lists. The group running it is chaired by Les Christidis and involves ornithologists from all continents (perhaps including some editors here). A subcommittee has brought together all literature relating to bird names. Judging from Wikipedia sites, I cannot be quite sure which taxonomic standard Wikipedia follows but wanted to draw attention of editors to the impending publication of the consolidated list, although I would guess that you are likely to know of it. If I can help with further information, let me know. GreenhouseBodegas (talk) 00:32, 13 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
@GreenhouseBodegas: we largely follow the IOC along with some info from IUCN where relevant. We would certainly take the new list on board and I am happy to look at it when it comes out and see what adjustments we would have to make to the nomenclature here. We will need to propose changes to the taxonomic standards being followed and once it is out we can look at that and see how much will have to be done. Having access to it as some sort of spread sheet will help as then we can possibly look at automating some of the process if necessary. How different would you say it will be from say the current IOC list? Cheers Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 16:34, 13 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
Not greatly different. And, given you already follow the IOC and IUCN, you will be following the new list anyway as the two are being combined with e-Bird. However, it is going to take a few years for the IOC to effect all the changes required given that any change needs to be assessed against the IUCN Red List criteria and the underlying databases changed in accordance. The final checks are being done on the spreadsheet but will try to make sure you are given a copy as soon as it is available. GreenhouseBodegas (talk) 18:55, 13 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
