Tomographic Experiment Using Radiative Recombinative Ionospheric EUV and Radio Sources

past Mission

Type

Orbiter

Launch

May 18, 1999

Partners

NASA, Boston University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Naval Research Laboratory, MIT, Phillips Laboratory, Cleveland Heights High School

Objective

Monitor Earth's ionosphere to better predict space weather

Designed to measure ultraviolet light in the upper atmosphere, TERRIERS was part of NASA's STudent Explorer Demonstration Initiative (STEDI), a program to demonstrate that small, low-cost, free-flying satellites could carry out high-quality space science. A collaboration led by the Center for Space Physics at Boston University, TERRIERS ran out of battery power after reaching orbit.
