About
School Meals Coalition
Celebrating over 100 member countries and more than 130 partners taking action for positive impact worldwide
Government-led and partner-supported, the School Meals Coalition is an example of a new generation of multilateralism, joining forces and working together to improve the quality, sustainability and scale of national school meals programmes.
The Coalition aims to break silos and pool resources by sharing best practices, experience, information, and technical support. Through a multisectoral and holistic approach, it addresses implementation challenges while strengthening evidence for decision-making.
A vehicle for multilateral actions worldwide
School feeding is one of the largest and most widespread social safety nets in the world.
418 million children benefit from school meals worldwide, which is 30 million more than the 388 million children in early 2020.
Overall, approximately 41 percent of children enrolled in primary school now have access to a free or subsidised daily school meal, rising to 61% in high-income countries.
Governments are investing around USD 48 billion in this intervention, and 99% of that investment is domestic – this is a global increase of USD 5 billion, since 2020.

Toward 2030
Global
progress
Despite substantial efforts, the world is still falling short of achieving the goal of providing a school meal to every child by 2030. Although school meal programmes have shown recovery following the COVID-19 crisis, access to healthy school meals for children in low-income countries has declined compared to pre-pandemic levels.
