Visit a historic Shinto Shrine nestled in a peaceful fishing village

Each day the shrine maidens and priests of Miho Shrine perform Asamike morning rituals that are open to the public, offering up prayers through rhythmic chanting, drumming, and sacred dancing. Set in a beautiful location in view of the sea, Miho Shrine is the head sanctuary of more than 3,000 nationwide that are dedicated to Ebisu, the god of maritime safety, fishing, and commerce. Visiting both it and Izumo Taisha at the opposite end of the Shimane Peninsula is said to be especially auspicious.

Stay in a traditional house on a secluded bay

This thoughtfully renovated 100-year-old traditional house is located in the charming fishing village of Mihonoseki, a once-busy port of the Edo era (1603–1867) that still today carries important Shinto significance. Perfect for private groups, the spacious house has a large kitchen and hinoki cypress bath, and is just steps away from the picturesque bay. Don the cotton yukata robe provided in the room and take a short stroll down the 200-year-old stone-paved alleyway to the Mihokan Hotel for a sumptuous seafood meal and a relaxing hot-spring soak. This lodging is well situated for exploring the Mt. Daisen area, too.

Trek by land and sea on an ecotour of the Oki Islands

For the adventurous and environmentally conscious, this tour starts with a trek through a rugged mountain trail down to the sea where participants will work together to gather marine debris found on the coast. Then guests will set out on a packraft, paddling along rocky caves and inlets while enjoying the wildlife and natural scenery. The tour ends with an outdoor coffee break by the sea.

Pick your own Japanese pears in season

The most delicious pears are those picked right off the tree at their peak! As many as 10 varieties are grown on-site, with the harvest season lasting from August to November. Which varieties will be ripe depends on the timing, but all are juicy and flavorful.
