Sacred Mountain

The tallest peak in the San’in area at 1,729 meters, Mt. Daisen in western Tottori Prefecture rewards visitors with the scenic beauty of the Chugoku mountain range as well as sweeping views of the Sea of Japan from its summit and along its trails. Together with the Oki Islands it is a central feature of Daisen-Oki National Park, drawing hikers and other nature lovers with waterfalls, hot springs, old-growth beech forests, and cycling, rafting, and kayaking adventures in addition to winter sports like skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing. The mountain is also known for its long history as a center of faith. Sanctuaries affiliated with Daisenji Temple, founded in 718, and Ogamiyama Shrine, whose origins are still older, can be visited in a leisurely two-hour loop starting from the Daisen Museum of Nature and History.
