The dissemination of digital fabrication devices such as 3D printers enables us the creative micro inventions to adapt various individual needs. We focus on nursing care, which requires a respect for individuality. We introduce our current effort called FabNurse, a research project to develop tools and accessories, human resources, and service design that realize the delivery of products that adapt individual needs in the nursing care field.

The theme of our lab is diversity and inclusion, and we are working to solve the social participation and social issues of people with disabilities, and we are collaborating with people in the field across various fields such as employment, education, and sports. In Japan, understanding of the challenges faced by people with disabilities is not widespread, so we believe that by disseminating the results of the four projects we have undertaken this year, we can make as many people as possible aware of our efforts to promote mutual understanding between people with and without disabilities.

Shigeru Ban Lab is working on projects aimed at disaster relief and solving social issues, based on architectural planning, design, and construction. At the β Dome/β Studio, where we were involved in the design and construction, we will be explaining about the two buildings and introducing our past and current projects with demonstrations and models. We will be focusing on proposals for temporary housing as well as the partition system to protect privacy in evacuation shelters during disasters. The Capital Moving Project, which studies the relocation of capital functions in response to the current concentration of power in Tokyo, will present its proposal for a temporary Diet building.

We conduct meteorological researches such as an observation using monitoring equipment and aviation turbulence associated with typhoons. In this session, we introduce the utilization possibility of meteorological forecasting using atmospheric pressure measured by mobile devices, and the latest research result on the relationship between typhoon and turbulence. Along with these topics, our laboratory members and faculty will discuss the issues and future possibilities of current forecasting and typhoon studies. We hope that this session will deepen your interest in meteorology and climatology.

Learning from extraordinary abilities of nature: tardigrades and spider silk

Darwinian evolution creates exceptions to survive unexpected natural selections, with extraordinary abilities unsurpassed by artificial technologies. Tardigrades are a group of microscopic eight-legged animals known for their extremotolerance, including extreme heat and cold, extreme pressure, ionizing radiation. One species even survived direct exposure to space vacuum and UV-C for ten days. Spider silks are proteins that exhibit extraordinary mechanical properties including high tensile strengths, extensibilities, and exceptional toughness, with potential applications in industry as renewable materials. We employed the state-of-the-art advanced biosciences technologies to elucidate the mechanisms behind these extraordinary abilities of nature.

Our activities include maintenance of biotope restoration, nuisance wildlife management, and park management which are based on fieldwork. In this exhibition, research around Kanagawa prefecture will be introduced from the perspective of four major categories of ecosystem services: provisioning, regulating, cultural and supporting services.

Models of Online Collaboration to Realize and Shape the Aspirations of Individuals, Organizations

COVID19 brought us the sudden big wave of 100% online communication and we were obliged to transfer drastically from face to face approach to online approach. Basically, our lab focuses on 100% fieldwork activities so for the past 18 months, we have struggled to mingle the online and offline to realize 'real' human communication and community with heart, 'passion', 'creativity' and 'team building'. Now we have finally reached the stage to create a living and sustainable online community for all generations. What is more, we have achieved to prove what we can realize collaboratively and make it sustainable even online. We are looking forward to developing new partnerships that share and co-create the ingenuity to shape the thoughts of diverse individuals online.

In our laboratory, we are conducting research and development of robots with a high degree of sociality that are close to people and collaborate by making full use of physical and emotional interactions. In this exhibition, we will introduce some projects such as research on the exterior of robots and dialogue behavior, and robots that improve the quality of remote conversation. Through these technologies, we will show what kind of sociality robots should have in robot to robot (R2R) and robot to human (R2H) interactions.

Unraveling the biological evolution in diverse environments based on genome information.

As part of the RNA function analysis group, we conduct research on the fundamental basis of life on earth. We focus on two key aspects; the environment and information. The Earth's environment is rich in diversity and among the various environments, extreme climates make it difficult for many organisms to survive. However, there are organisms that nonetheless inhabit those areas with extreme conditions. In order to survive the harsh environments, these organisms had to adapt. Consequently, leading them to acquire unique genes and mechanisms to enhance the rate of survival. The genetic information that organisms have in common play a crucial role here, and that is done by the support of RNA. The video will provide an apprehensible explanation of how extreme environments are linked with RNA.

We are constantly exposed to various microorganisms such as viruses, bacteria and fungi. The urbanization and globalization have contributed to the emergence and spread of antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) pathogens and increased risk of large-scale outbreaks of infectious disease. The International Consortium MetaSUB (metasub.org) was launched in 2015 to study urban microbiomes. We will introduce our projects to study urban microbiomes around the globe before, during and after the COVID-19 pandemic and mass gathering events such as World Cup and Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Japan is a multilingual and multicultural society, but to investigate whether it is moving toward coexistence (kyosei), we need to critically investigate the situation instead of simply praising multilingualism and multiculturalism. In the Sugihara seminar, we focus on various phenomena of transnationals and the majorities in society and emphasize the importance of taking the step to change society. What can we do as individuals to help make the community of Japanese speakers more inclusive? Our projects, 1) collaboration of SFC P.E. and plain Japanese, 2) study support at a part-time high school, and 3) a SNS project raising questions on discrimination and bias around us, share the step they have taken to change society.

Since being established in 2001 at Tsuruoka Town Campus (Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture), IAB has been getting a lot of attention by starting up of several biotech companies and its unique program for highschool students. Now we can find those young students coming back to Tsuruoka as scientists, our educational ecosystem is beginning to circulate.

The theme of our lab is diversity and inclusion, and we are working on social participation of people with disabilities and solutions to social issues. In this session, we will present the results of the projects that we have been working on this year, such as Sports x SDGs, making a manual for employment of people with disabilities, and constructing a barrier-free environment for public transportation. In addition, we are going to invite guest speakers from educational institutions and companies who are stakeholders in solving social issues, as well as people with disabilities, who are also parties to the theme of this session, to give lectures and deepen the discussion on the solutions to the essential issues that have taken root in society.

Creating an Attractive Dokodemo Campus through the Challenge of Super Fusion of Online and Offline - A Case Study of the Summer Special Research Project Japan's Hometown Story Starting with Onigiri - Realizing Cross-Border Collaboration within Japan Using the SDGs as a Starting Point-

Our laboratory has made a sudden shift from a thoroughgoing field approach to an online field due to the Covid-19. We are now in the midst of creating and disseminating a collaborative hybrid that transcends the framework of time and space. One of the challenges is the creation of a picture book in the 2021 summer special research project Japan's Hometown Story Starting with Onigiri, which was conducted with 50 people including junior and senior high school students from all over Japan. Using this as a case study, we will discuss in depth the process of deriving answers for the future with volunteer high school students about the possibility of a new form of cross: diverse partnerships that do not return to the legacy campus.

At the β Dome/β Studio, where we were involved in the design and construction, we will be explaining about the two buildings and introducing our past and current projects with demonstrations and models. We will be focusing on proposals for temporary housing as well as the partition system to protect privacy in evacuation shelters during disasters. The Capital Moving Project, which studies the relocation of capital functions in response to the current concentration of power in Tokyo, will present its proposal for a temporary Diet building.

Learning from extraordinary abilities of nature: tardigrades and spider silk

Darwinian evolution creates exceptions to survive unexpected natural selections, with extraordinary abilities unsurpassed by artificial technologies. Tardigrades are a group of microscopic eight-legged animals known for their extremotolerance, including extreme heat and cold, extreme pressure, ionizing radiation. One species even survived direct exposure to space vacuum and UV-C for ten days. Spider silks are proteins that exhibit extraordinary mechanical properties including high tensile strengths, extensibilities, and exceptional toughness, with potential applications in industry as renewable materials. We employed the state-of-the-art advanced biosciences technologies to elucidate the mechanisms behind these extraordinary abilities of nature.

Models of Online Collaboration to Realize and Shape the Aspirations of Individuals, Organizations

COVID19 brought us the sudden big wave of 100% online communication and we were obliged to transfer drastically from face to face approach to online approach. Basically, our lab focuses on 100% fieldwork activities so for the past 18 months, we have struggled to mingle the online and offline to realize 'real' human communication and community with heart, 'passion', 'creativity' and 'team building'. Now we have finally reached the stage to create a living and sustainable online community for all generations. What is more, we have achieved to prove what we can realize collaboratively and make it sustainable even online. We are looking forward to developing new partnerships that share and co-create the ingenuity to shape the thoughts of diverse individuals online.

In our laboratory, we are conducting research and development of robots with a high degree of sociality that are close to people and collaborate by making full use of physical and emotional interactions. In this exhibition, we will introduce some projects such as research on the exterior of robots and dialogue behavior, and robots that improve the quality of remote conversation. Through these technologies, we will show what kind of sociality robots should have in robot to robot (R2R) and robot to human (R2H) interactions.

Unraveling the biological evolution in diverse environments based on genome information.

As part of the RNA function analysis group, we conduct research on the fundamental basis of life on earth. We focus on two key aspects; the environment and information. The Earth's environment is rich in diversity and among the various environments, extreme climates make it difficult for many organisms to survive. However, there are organisms that nonetheless inhabit those areas with extreme conditions. In order to survive the harsh environments, these organisms had to adapt. Consequently, leading them to acquire unique genes and mechanisms to enhance the rate of survival. The genetic information that organisms have in common play a crucial role here, and that is done by the support of RNA. The video will provide an apprehensible explanation of how extreme environments are linked with RNA.

We are constantly exposed to various microorganisms such as viruses, bacteria and fungi. The urbanization and globalization have contributed to the emergence and spread of antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) pathogens and increased risk of large-scale outbreaks of infectious disease. The International Consortium MetaSUB (metasub.org) was launched in 2015 to study urban microbiomes. We will introduce our projects to study urban microbiomes around the globe before, during and after the COVID-19 pandemic and mass gathering events such as World Cup and Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Japan is a multilingual and multicultural society, but to investigate whether it is moving toward coexistence (kyosei), we need to critically investigate the situation instead of simply praising multilingualism and multiculturalism. In the Sugihara seminar, we focus on various phenomena of transnationals and the majorities in society and emphasize the importance of taking the step to change society. What can we do as individuals to help make the community of Japanese speakers more inclusive? Our projects, 1) collaboration of SFC P.E. and plain Japanese, 2) study support at a part-time high school, and 3) a SNS project raising questions on discrimination and bias around us, share the step they have taken to change society.

Creating an Attractive Dokodemo Campus through the Challenge of Super Fusion of Online and Offline - A Case Study of the Summer Special Research Project Japan's Hometown Story Starting with Onigiri - Realizing Cross-Border Collaboration within Japan Using the SDGs as a Starting Point-

Our laboratory has made a sudden shift from a thoroughgoing field approach to an online field due to the Covid-19. We are now in the midst of creating and disseminating a collaborative hybrid that transcends the framework of time and space. One of the challenges is the creation of a picture book in the 2021 summer special research project Japan's Hometown Story Starting with Onigiri, which was conducted with 50 people including junior and senior high school students from all over Japan. Using this as a case study, we will discuss in depth the process of deriving answers for the future with volunteer high school students about the possibility of a new form of cross: diverse partnerships that do not return to the legacy campus.
