Momen (Cotton)Matsusaka Momen and Ise Momen

Momen (Cotton) - Matsusaka Momen and Ise Momen

The Ise region is renowned for two traditional types of cotton textiles: 'Matsusaka Momen' and 'Ise Momen.' Matsusaka, located north of Ise City, has a climate ideal for growing cotton and indigo, making it a hub for cotton weaving. During the Edo period, the indigo-dyed cotton fabric from Matsusaka, known for its distinctive white and blue vertical stripes, became incredibly popular in Edo (now Tokyo), earning the name 'Matsusaka Stripes' or 'Matsusaka Momen.'
Further north, around Tsu City, 'Ise Momen' is produced. This cotton fabric was a popular souvenir sold along the historic Ise Kaido route, known for its soft texture and pleasant feel. Ise Momen continues to be cherished for its exceptional quality and comfort.
