Membership & Participation

Since 1956, the NMFTA has represented the interests of the less-than-truckload (LTL) motor carrier industry, and for-hire interstate and intrastate carriers. There are two ways to join NMFTA.

Full members receive all Participant benefits plus the ability to serve on the NMFTA Classification Resource Committee.

Participation in the NMFTA allows carriers to use and reference the NMFC in their business documents and tools.

Participation in the NMFC

About Participation

Participation in the NMFC allows carriers and other transportation companies to use or reference the copyrighted NMFC in their tariffs, rate schedules, or contracts with their customers.

Carriers and transportation companies whose rates, charges or terms of transportation (including packaging and bills of lading) are based on or reference the NMFC or any of its provisions must participate in the NMFC.

  • Unlimited support from the Freight Classification Development Council (FCDC), for assistance in the proper interpretation and application of the NMFC, including guidance in determining the applicable classification for a particular commodity, and consulting on packaging specifications and requirements.

Membership in the NMFC

All the benefits of participation, plus access to serve on NMFC Committees.

NMFTA is committed to helping members meet the challenges confronting the transportation industry in the 21st century through research, education, and the publication of specifications, rules, transportation codes, and the preparation and dissemination of studies, reports, and analyses.

Membership entitles the carrier to serve on the Classification Resource Committee (CRC) and to participate in the National Motor Freight Classification® (NMFC®).
