As a leader in scientific innovation, 3M is making significant progress in reducing its overall environmental impact. By working closely with its global network of strategic partners, the company can progress its sustainability and climate innovation initiatives, which are already tackling some of the world’s biggest climate challenges.

The 3M State of Science Insights Survey* 2024 highlights that a large proportion of adults in the United Kingdom, believe that science is important, both in their own lives and to society as a whole.  This trend continues with nearly 90% of UK adults, saying that the need to address climate change is important to them personally.  And 67% of UK adults agree that jobs in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) are the future of work, and are second most likely type of job to be recommended behind skilled trades.

About the State of Science: The 3M State of Science Insights is an independent survey conducted by Morning Consult that examines global and local market attitudes towards science. The survey was conducted from December 2023 to January 2024 and covered 10 countries in Asia-Pacific, North America, South America, and Europe.

A Consolidated Commitment to Innovation in Climate Technologies

3M affirms its commitment to climate innovation by using cutting-edge scientific materials to advance in areas such as decarbonization, energy efficiency and sustainable infrastructure. Some of the most notable innovations include:

Vehicle electrification solutions

3M is advancing the future of transportation and helping to imagine and build the most advanced and efficient vehicles and roads.

3M enables battery teams to design and produce the safe, high-performance batteries that consumers demand. By leveraging the expertise of multiple technologies, 3M offers solutions that enable existing designs while investing in innovation for future models.

Carbon Capture

3M is a critical strategic partner with companies like Svante, creating innovative carbon capture solutions. 3M's reusable filter media acts like a sponge absorbing CO2 from the atmosphere. The carbon is then removed from the sorbent by the heat of the steam and permanently sequestered or reused.

With 51 technology platforms within 3M, we are innovating and creating new technology capabilities to meet the growing needs of the carbon capture and removal market. The Joint Development Agreement (JDA) between 3M and Svante announced in 2023 focuses on the development and manufacturing of solutions using parallel channel structured adsorbent technology. 3M's reusable Sorbent-on-a-Roll (SOAR) allows Svante to trap CO2 and permanently remove it from the atmosphere.

3M™ PELTOR™ WS™ ALERT™ XPVWorld's First Self-Charging Communicating Hard Hat

3M worked closely with Exeger to develop the 3M™ PELTOR™ WS™ ALERT™ XPV Self-Charging Protective Communication Helmet.

The material science built into these helmets has created a perfect blend of performance, design, protection, and durability. The 3M™ PELTOR™ WS™ ALERT™ XPV converts outdoor and indoor light into clean, continuous energy, with a high potential to eliminate the need for millions of disposable batteries each year.

It allows for hands-free operation and seamless communication with colleagues on the construction site. The headset can connect to devices equipped with Bluetooth technology and offers a noise-cancelling microphone to facilitate clearer conversations, even in noisy work environments.

3M Film Technology for Climate and Greenhouse Growers

3M is partnering with Swiss start-up Voltiris to help greenhouse growers around the world reduce energy costs and produce more. 3M's film technology is used to split light waves into two: one for growing crops, the other for solar energy storage. 3M technologies are helping to improve greenhouses to feed the world.

3M and Voltiris are transforming greenhouses, helping them become energy independent while simultaneously improving plant growth and yield. 3M's solution is light management, using a series of thin films to capture the optimal light waves to grow plants, and then using the remaining light waves to produce solar energy that can provide up to 70% of a greenhouse's energy needs.
