Welcome
Welcome back to the WG III newsletter. This edition looks back at our first-event virtual Lead Author Meeting (run from 14-19 April 2020), where experts and scientists from around the world came together online to work on WG III's contribution to the Sixth Assessment Report (AR6). As part of our third Lead Author Meeting (LAM), we're also sharing details about a virtual outreach event to be held on 30 April with the Ministry of the Environment, Government of Ecuador, Climate Development Knowledge Network, and Fundación Futuro Latinoamericano. The registration details are below. This month's newsletter also features a huge amount of outreach undertaken by WG III Authors and members of the Technical Support Unit (TSU). Much of this has been completed virtually, with links for you to watch/listen to below. Remember, if you'd like to share this newsletter with friends, colleagues or your social network you can use this link.

WG III Holds First-ever Virtual Lead Author Meeting
Experts and Scientists from WG III worked virtually on 14 - 19 April 2020 to advance their progress on the WG III contribution to AR6. More than 270 experts from 65 countries came together online for one week to start preparing a second draft of the report, which is currently due to be finalized in September 2021. The meeting was originally due to be hosted by the Ministry of the Environment, Government of Ecuador, but was run online because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
During the meeting's opening ceremony, the Chair of the IPCC, Hoesung Lee, and the Minister for the Environment, Government of Ecuador, Juan Sebastián DeHowitt, expressed their support for the virtual meeting. “This is the first time that the IPCC has conducted a virtual Lead Author Meeting. I would like to acknowledge the commitment and dedication of our authors and thank the Co-Chairs of Working Group III for making this happen,” said IPCC Chair Hoesung Lee. “While we know this can’t achieve the same results as a meeting in person over a week, it will show what the IPCC can achieve at a distance.”
Throughout the six-day meeting, the authors from 17 different chapters worked tirelessly across a number of timezones to prepare the second draft of the report, with the assistance and support of the WG III TSU. You can watch the video from the virtual meeting and opening ceremony below.

Upcoming Outreach: What do the recent IPCC Findings Mean for Latin America?
To coincide with the third Lead Author Meeting, the Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN) and Fundación Futuro Latinoamericano (FFLA), supported by the Ministry of Environment (Government of Ecuador), invite you to join them in a virtual outreach event on “What do we need to know about the recent IPCC findings for Latin America?” The presentations will provide an opportunity to hear from experts from across Latin America on the recent IPCC Special Reports, as well as climate mitigation in the context of cities, transport and innovation. A Q&A after the event will allow guests to submit their own questions to the panel.
This event offers the chance for members of the public to directly engage with the IPCC in the midst of an official meeting. The sessions will be chaired by Gabriela Villamarin from Fundacion Futuro Latinoamericano and Roberto Sanchez, Vice-Chair of IPCC Working Group II. The event will be formally opened by the Ministry of Environment, Government of Ecuador, with an introduction from Jim Skea, Co-chair of IPCC Working Group III. Speakers include:
- Gabriela Villamarin (FFLA)
- Patricia Velasco (FFLA)
- Suzana Kahn Riberiro (CLA, Chapter 10 - Transport)
