Bibliotheca Nationalis Australiae est maxima bibliotheca referentiae in Australia, quae secundum Actum Bibliothecarum Nationalium (National Library Act 1960[1][2][3][4][5]) officium habet "collectionis nationalis materiarum bibliothecarum propriarum tenendarum et excolendarum, amplá materiarum bibliothecarum propriarum ad Australiam et Australianos pertinentium collectione inclusá."[6] Quae collectio 6 496 772 res annis 2012 et 2013 comprehendit, cum 15 506 metris manuscriptorum.[3] Bibliotheca Parkes in vico Canberrae in Territorio Capitali Australiano sita est.[7] Inter res quas bibliotheca colligit sunt libri, magazinae, picturae, photographemata, tabulae geographicae, partiturae musicae, manuscripta, historiae orales, situsque interretiales.

Bibliotheca Nationalis Australiae, quamquam per Actum Bibliothecae Nationalis 1960 rite sanctum constituta, quasi bibliotheca nationalis fuerat, contra solum bibliothecam parlamentariam paene ab initio. Bibliotheca Parlamentaria Australiae anno 1901 constituta est ad Parlamentum Foederale Australiae nuper creatum adiuvandum. Ab initio, Bibliotheca Parlamentaria Australiae collectionem vere nationalem excogitare debuit. Consilium Bibliothecae Parlamentariae Coniunctum anno 1907, rogatore Friderico Gulielmo Holder Equite praeside, propositum Bibliothecae Parlamentariae Rei Publicae sic definivit:

Consilium bibliothecae exemplar prae se aspicere pergit, pro tempore cum Parlamentum in capite foederali constitutum sit, magnae bibliothecae publicae exstruendae, illius clarissimae Bibliothecae Congressionalis Vasingtoniae similis; talis quidem bibliotheca, ut nationis Australianae digna erit, domus litterarum, neque civitatis, neque aetatis, sed mundi, atque aeternitatis.[8][9]
