What We Can Do

The main IGES-JISE’s strategies for nature conservation & restoration consist of the following 4 steps of procedure that specialized by long-term experiential ecological products.

STEP1: Fundamental Research

Searching on Quality of Ecosystem

Researching the minute flora, plant communities and the other natural resources on site, we evaluate the quality of natural environment of the area individually. Concretely, the regional vegetation geographies and the actual vegetation maps based on phytosociology are made up. These fundamental data are presented to every stakeholders engage in the nature conservation, for example, city planner, civil engineer, river or land manager and so on.

STEP2: Planning & Targeting

Evaluating the 1st step’s output and estimating the potential natural vegetation of area, we make the land’s indigenous natural environment clear. IGES-JISE diagnoses the present condition of the ecosystem which has become clear with step 1 and the information of the potential natural vegetation comprehensively, and presents the ecological planning, and targets for the purpose of decision making on nature preservation or restoration.

STEP3: Reforestation & Nature Restoration

Onsite Practice Toward for Targets

On the basis of the result of step 1 and 2, we set the target vegetation or landscape which correspond to the land property (ex: topography, soils, climate etc.), and practice the reforestation and nature restoration. With the case of the IGES-JISE’s reforestation, on-site potential natural vegetation is regarded as one of the important targets for nature restoration.

STEP4: Verifying

Monitaring Restored Ecosystem

In order to verify the action of step 3, researches and monitorings on the quality, structure, function of the restored ecosystem are done. For example, with the case of the IGES-JISE’s reforestation, we analyze the growing behavior of planted trees, and evaluate the function on restored forest as habitat of many indigenous species.
