Scope: The IEEE-HKN 120th Founders’ Day Hackathon is an opportunity for members to collaborate with others and complete fun tasks based on introductory computer science, electrical engineering, and computer engineering tasks. The hackathon is based over a large time frame to give teams adequate time to coordinate and work together to solve the problems while still prioritizing course work and any other circumstances which may arise.

FAQs:

What is a hackathon?

A hackathon is an event where people collaborate intensively over a short period to create innovative solutions or projects.
Our hackathon will be quite unique, running from October 11th to 22nd, and conducted online and asynchronously.
Teams will receive tasks through a GitHub platform that we’ll provide, with the entire competition period to complete and submit their work. Following the submission phase, the jury will review your projects, and you’ll be asked to prepare a presentation for October 28th, Founders’ Day. This 10-day event will be an exciting opportunity to develop innovative ideas, connect with HKN fellows worldwide, and showcase your work to a global audience.

I am interested in joining the hackathon but still don’t have a team, can I still participate?
Yes, for sure! Join the Discord channel and visit the “Team Formation” thread, where you’ll get help finding team members. Teams can be chapter-based or mixed, and each team will need to choose a name.

How much time would I have to dedicate to the event?

The event spans over a ten days period, however the tasks range in difficulty so that everyone can participate regardless of other obligations (i.e. university, work,…). This hackathon should not be seen as a continuous and demanding event, but as the occasion to solve challenging and fun tasks while interacting with fellow HKN members, organizing the work as they wish. Participants will be required to give their availability only during the final presentation.

What kind of tasks will be presented?

Tasks will mainly address IEEE thematics of interests, however many of them will involve more playful activities, keeping in mind the ludic spirit behind the celebration of Founders Day.

Will there be prizes?
Absolutely! The top 5 teams will win a special sponsored Test Equity prize pack, with exciting things for the whole Chapter to enjoy. Both the tasks and the final presentations will be assessed by the jury.

Why participate?
This is HKN’s first international hackathon, offering a unique opportunity to connect with colleagues from chapters around the world that you might not meet regularly. The event will be themed around HKN’s founding, providing an engaging way to celebrate 120 years of our society together.

When is this happening?

The hackathon platform will be open to submit projects from October 11th – October 21st. Judges will be given until October 27th to grade the projects using our guidelines, and winners will be announced at a Founders Day Hackathon Finale October 28th at 12:00 PM. EST.

Team requirements: Recommend at least three (3) members for your team, with a maximum of eight (8)  team members. We recommended having individuals familiar with the basics of Computer Science, Computer Engineering, and Electrical Engineering knowledge.

Platform: The hackathon will use GitHub as a way to communicate information and tasks between judges and participants. We will use the official Hackathon Discord channel for open discussion and networking.

Tasks: Task will be a mix of technical and nontechnical activities that encourage teams to explore the history of HKN and build upon technical excellence. Explanatory materials will be provided along with the tasks in the repository when the hackathon begins.
